Comments - The
Ale House is the first spot me and my friends hit whenever we're
in the city. The bartenders remember who you are, and Alice will
make you a "crazy-razy" if you ask nicely. The back
room allows for small groups to carry on their own party, and
it's always nice to be in a place that has the Isley Brothers in
the juke box. By far, the best part of the Ale House is the
atmosphere. There's never a fight, and never a lonely person.
It's the best water-hole in town. - D.T.
Flashback - You're in the sixties again. It has great tunes on
the jukebox. The bartenders are friendly and efficient. The
prices ($4 for a bottle of Coors Light) are reasonable. The
bathrooms are one-at-a-time. - T.K.
This place sucked. It was small and empty, pretty dead on a Friday night.. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. - I.G.

- Irish
bar anchoring the upstairs food court of Pier 17 at the South
Street Seaport. Large, irregular shaped bar maximizes
serving space. Balcony over-looking East River and Brooklyn
is an ideal spot for a beer on a summer afternoon (wear your
sunglasses to protect from the glare of the river). Used to
be hopping on Friday nights for the post work Wall Street crowd
in its 1980's heyday. Still draws the tourist crowds. - S.M.
I know this is a tourist spot, but I went there one Thursday when there was an
Irish "Guiness" musicfest there. We sat outside and watched the bands, while all the time we were taken care of by authentic
Irish waitresses. They were fantastic, every 3 rounds there was a buy back. The waitress was so great after her shift she was meeting her sister and friends down the street and promised she would be back. Yeah, right. So we moved inside and the bartender was just as cool. Much to our surprise the waitress and sister did come back and we all had a great night singing dancing and of course drinking. -C.A.C.

This is a two-room establishment with 3 bars. One room
is a dance club and the other is a sports bar. I was there
recently for a private benefit party. The service was good and
the DJ played older music. The last time I was there, it was
still called Casey's Dance Hall & Saloon (the NYC cousin of
the Westhampton legend). It's still under the same ownership.
It's only open to the public on Friday & Saturday nights and
there is a cover charge. Private parties are popular. The
bathrooms are adequate. - T.K.
This bar is a good place to hang out. [One of the bartenders] is the
sexiest bartender in the Big Apple and the ladies flock to his
bar. His suave lines and sexy flair make ladies weak in their
knees. So ladies- Beware. - C.J.
This place used to be good, but recently it has sucked, the line
is too long and they think they're a club and there not. - C.S.
Never again; this place is B&T central. The $10 cover and expensive drinks are in no way justified unless you enjoy hanging w/ that particular scene. -
K.H.
Like my father always says in reference to me, so much unrealized potential. The space, if used properly would lend itself to a rip roaring good time. However, nothing quite douses the flame of fun like a
$15 cover and a doorman who fails to realize that he is exactly that, a doorman and not Peter
guarding the gates of heaven (let the girls in man, they are freezing). The bartenders were friendly, but if my best friend charged me $5 for a Bud I'd want to smack him too. Avoid this one, hop a cab to
McFadden's instead, same type of people only more apt to let loose. - D.K.
This is really a good spot, besides the somewhat high drink prices, but face it, no place in the city has cheap drinks.
A lot of hot girls, a good pick up spot. An older crowd so no worries about any underage kids inside. Good blend of music,
hip-hop, reggae and some commercial house. Overall, I recommend it for all. -R.J.
This place is awful. I've been here a few times (not by my choice), and it is lame..lame..lame. It tiny inside, and they charge about $10 or $15 to get in. The music sucks really bad. Plus the crowd seems really young like very early twenties. - T.M.

- Upper
east class 20-30 year olds looking for a few drinks and some
basic top 40 music. Good clean crowd. - F.R.
Awesome spot. Best Upper East Bar by far for the last three years
in a row. Always a great time. Acoustic Tuesdays are cool, and
weekends are always packed. I'm always hooking up at this joint.
- M.M.
The place is a good place to go for a good time and to pick up
chicks. The new DJ is awesome and plays a good mix of everything,
plays the crowd perfectly . The DJ has made the place pumpin',
and the bartenders are hot. - D.P.
Cool Juke box, fireplace, and the upstairs lounge is sweet ! I
like during the week it 's less crowded, and a very good
neighborhood vibe. Weekends are jammed, so get there early, and
grab a bite, the grub is tasty. - B.R.
Nice place, except the bartenders don't know how to make
different drinks. - D.J.
This place ought to be called Mud River. The bartender's
inefficiency and lack of attention to detail is only matched by
the pure egomaniac they have for a manager. We ordered a drink
called Baby Guinness and were presented with the draft beer
instead. When the mistake was pointed out, the bartender rudely
told us to just take the beers since she "couldn't do
anything with them anyway." To add insult to injury, we were
charged for the drinks we didn't want. When the Manager overheard
a remark I made to my friend about the fact that we shouldn't
have to pay for drinks we didn't order, we were summarily tossed
out of the bar. This [manager] had two bouncers, each the size of
a house, escort out a group of girls each barely over 5 feet
tall. Apparently he relishes his power - we were told by staff
members that he "does this all the time." - A.P.
Not only is this place terrible because it is cramped and over
crowded and the wait for a drink unreasonable, but the bouncers have unbearable rage. There is nothing enjoyable
about trying to imbibe some mind altering intoxicants while some
gym rat who can't fulfill his miserable dream to be an XFL tackle
dummy threatens you because you are standing in his way thus
preventing him from yelling at some other innocent patron. It is
as if they don't want their customers to stay there. This is
probably because the crowd in this bar has to be the ugliest that
the Upper East Side has to offer. This place wasn't cool two
years ago and has been spiraling downwards ever since. - C.M.
Not so great food, a waitress who brought the wrong drinks or
forgot them completely, a DJ that refused to play requests, and
hot bartenders who weren't totally with it. The crowd wasn't all
that bad though. - M.R.
I agree that the bartenders have no idea what they are doing and
the manager is an egomaniac. When you order a Kahlua and milk and
the bartender asks "what's in that", you know the place
sucks!! There are too many good bars around the upper east side
to waste your time at this one. - S.O.
The DJ was awesome in this place and he played the best mix of
music I've ever heard. Good time and a definite party place. -
M.A.
Regardless of what some of the other reviewers say, this place is
a lot of fun. Perhaps the best bar on the Upper East Side. I
never go there for the food and I'm not one to order fancy drinks
so I won't comment on those things. But, if you just want a great
night out in a bar that always has a decent crowd but is not hard
to get into, you might want to check this place out. The ratio of
guys to girls is usually good and the people that come here
aren't trying to "make the scene" or impress anyone.
The music, from 80s tunes to current dance music, is pretty
diverse and a lot of fun and people are there to cut loose and
have fun. Admittedly, it does get crowded...so, along with that
comes stressed out bouncers that aren't all that friendly and you
might have to wait a few minutes to get served.....but I prefer a
crowded, exciting place to a dead, empty place any day. - C.M.
The DJ there is definitely the best I have ever heard in the
city. He plays a diverse mix of music and it isn't only hard core
rap like most places these days. The service could be better, but
it's a great time for going out and hooking up, and the new
manager is really nice. Definite thumbs up. - J.J.
Might be the worst bar on the Upper East Side. What is up with
the velvet rope treatment? Service is non-existent. Music is
played way too loud. Not a fun place. -M.B.S.
OK, if you don't know what is in the drink you order then you
should get kicked out for asking for it at Mad River (if its a
weekend night after 11pm). Its a great place for people who have
recently graduated college or been in the work force for a while.
I hope you like to get really drunk and dance up a storm. I
repeat, if you want drinks with more than 2 parts after 11pm you
came to the wrong place. The atmosphere is always changing, but
it is worth it to stop in and see how the crowd is. It may not be
your scene on one particular night. I would strongly suggest
Wednesdays. I was there last Wednesday and the place was packed
with plenty of lovely ladies. - K.J.
Like it or not, it's always crowded, from 5pm till close.. and
why is anyone surprised that the bartenders suck? It's a typical
UES stereotype bar. It's owned by like 5 young guys from Wall St.
and totally packed out with their friends all the time, which
makes it hard to get drinks when every one is a friend of an
owner. Also, I think most of the bartenders are too, that's why
they're [not good], no career bartenders here. However, this has been all
too common w/ some of the hottest longest running bars on the
U.E.S. for years, so like it or not, it ain't going anywhere.. and
yes, the bouncers are meat heads too... which kinda sucks. - J.D.
The egomaniac manager that everyone keeps referring to is the only reason I go
here. Talk about eye candy. This guy is so sexy, that just looking at him makes
your temperature rise. Everyone in this
place can feel the hormones bouncing off the walls. It makes for
great entertainment, and no two nights here are ever the same. - K.V.
My friend was wearing a pair of boots when he went to the door, and the doorman
told him that he couldn't get in because he was wearing sneakers. He replied,
"These are boots," to which the bouncer replied, "No boots,
either." 5 minutes later my other friend comes out of the bar to say hi to
us on line, and he was wearing a pair of sneakers. The bartender upstairs was
[bad]. We paid 20 bucks for an open bar private party type thing which was to last until 12, and at 11:45 he made us start paying 6 dollars for drinks in tiny 8 ounce cups. I would not go back there for anything. -
Z.S.
Mad River isn't for everyone - the people who complain about the bar are most likely the people that show up and order martinis - this isn't a martini bar! It is about beer and mixed drinks and an awesome party atmosphere and fun, upbeat music with a friendly staff. I am actually
surprised at the bartender comments because every time I go, the bartenders are serving people as quickly as possible (you have to realize how packed this place gets) and always are giving away free shots and drinks to patrons. A word of advice - just throw the bartender a big tip early and he or she will make sure you aren't waiting for drinks later! -
J.I.
This has become one of the better night life bar spots in the city. They get a constant rotation of hot girls behind the bar and the managers seem to know how to keep the party going. if your looking for a good time, whatever the night, take the time to drop in on this bar of hardy party goers. Check out the Wednesdays with live music by some crazy guy named Ricky!! Oh.... the wings are
phenomenal. -A.N.
One of the few places to get Blue Moon beer that I've found... lots of cute girls and guys in their twenties. Can be loud and crowded on weekends. -
C.W.
Great Upper East side spot, great crowd. In scene, music, I give it a 10. - L.L.
Wow, what a good time! This place may not be for everyone, but if you are looking to have a fun, crazy, wild night, this is the place to be. Everyone around me was having a great time, taking shots, dancing on the bar, and just letting loose! The bartenders and
wait staff were really great and attentive to us. The bathrooms were, well, not so great by the end of the night, but that is my only complaint. This place is the place to go on the UES for a serious party! -
J.I.
I absolutely love this bar and have never had a bad time. Yet on the weekends it takes
forever to get a drink and you need to be tipsy to deal with the crowd. And the bathrooms....well you have to fight though the dance crowd to get to the lines!! They play a really good mix of music to please everyone. The bouncers are awesome and a little hint for the females: like most bars...if your female and are with a bunch of other females...there is no wait for you to get in!!
So just move your way to the front or make your eye to the bouncer and have fun! -
C.P.
Mad River is by far the best place to go to on the Upper East Side. The staff is great and everyone is always ready to party and have a good time. - S.98
Here is the deal with Mad River. If you want to get wasted, hook up, and dance until you cant feel your legs, then you have come to the right place. If you want a low-key evening with a fancy shmancy drink and to talk to your friends, go somewhere else. Mad River has its good times and bad times, but expect to have a good time if you want to party and a bad time if you want to chill. And stop complaining about the bouncers, most bars where everyone is drunk and being stupid have strict bouncers or else people would get hurt.
- H.E.
I went there on a Friday night for happy hour around 7, then by 9 the place was
jumping. They had 2 guest bartenders there that just completely took the bar
over, They did screw up a few drinks but the place was definitely the place to be that
night. I stayed until 3am and there were a lot of cool, hot girls. They played the music you would hear at the
Boardy Barn. People loved it and so did I. Good job, guest bartenders. -
B.K.
I been here a few times and have a lot of fun. Great place to meet cool people. - C.R.

- Small
neighborhood bar on the upper east side opened in the spring of
2000. Moving into the space formerly occupied by Crawford's, Pub
88 and Club Car, Marty O'Brien's is named after the boxing
pseudonym of Frank Sinatra's father. The juke box and photos on
the wall pay homage to that era and mementos from co-owner Liam's
life. Although the narrow front bar area leaves room for not much
more than serious drinking, it opens up slightly in the rear with
a tiny lounge area. The main attraction to this bar, however, is
the bartender and co-owner George, who is one of the best (and
hardest working) bartenders in New York. He is the type of
bartender who, if you introduce yourself, will remember your name
and your drink the next time you come in. And he's friendly and
funny, too. Definitely worth a visit! - S.M.
Finally a place where everyone (at least the bartender!) knows
your name! A great place to meet with a group of friends to watch
a ballgame or just shoot the breeze. George is the best bartender
in town. You will be greeted by name and your favorite drink upon
your second visit. You'll feel like a regular after five minutes.
- M.D.
If MurphGuide ever gives out awards for the best NYC bartender,
it's got to go to George. He's fun, knows your name and your
drink. Good bar too - small in the front, but opens up in the
back. For an added bonus, check it out on a Thursday night
when Pat McGuire is playing. - J.M.
If your looking for a place without all the "bells and
whistles", this is it. George makes you feel like a regular
on your first visit. Great late crowd. Great jukebox! Add it to
your favorites. - J.S.
Fine bar, great atmosphere, George is the best barman in the
city, funny and great craic. Well worth a visit, you might become
a regular. - Y.K.
Cold beer, good tunes, clean bathroom, The Yanks. What more could
you ask for? - P.S.
Qualities of this little pub are too numerous to mention. George
pours your beer before you ask for it, and has surehanded help
from Juan and Sergio. These guys are great! Go for an old-school
Quiz Night on Wednesdays or Pat McGuire on Thursdays. You will
not regret it! -M.B.
Real small, but even friendlier bar. The bartender George is a
true pro, he makes you fell like a regular the first time. Great
live music and the best jukebox on the upper east side. Well
worth a visit or ten! - B.A.
This is the place to stop in for a late cocktail. Lots of celebrities hangin' out for late
night abuse sessions. No holds barred. George is the greatest. -
S.G.
If you are looking for the best little bar in NYC, look no further. Although the space may be cramped, your style won't be. Maybe I am bias since I am one of the boys upstairs, but this bar has all the ingredients for a winner. I like to refer to Marty's as the black hole of drinking
because even if you come in for one drink, you always stay for at least 8. It's not your fault. It's just that George and Liam and the rest of the crew never forget your name and never let you see an empty glass.
Gorgeous George will drink with you and forget his name, but never yours or your drink. The first time is like the
100th...every time. Come in and ask for The Boys Upstairs and we'll come have a shot of
Rumple Minze with you. - J.M.

- Casual
upper west side hang out, popular with softball teams in the
summer. Features bar food, large screen TV, dart boards and sidewalk seating.
Beer special: buy 2 pitchers of Bud and get free chicken wings.
Friendly waitresses serve large groups with a smile. - S.M.
Featured on NYPD Blue. Numerous tables, good food, TVs (1 large
screen), wooden and brick walls. Limited beer selection.
Reasonable prices. The bathrooms

The service is awesome: bartenders smiley and nice on week days,
waitress pretty, smiley and adorable. Huge ambiance on baseball
nights. The food is excellent and quite cheap. John, the
bartender, is always smiling, a sun in this dark place. He will
remember your name, and will pay you the next shot, or will give
you a ridiculous tab at the end. All the people I bring to the
pub love him. He always have a nice word for somebody. That's why
we still go there. Nancy and Joanna, two of the waitress are
efficient, very nice and still friendly. - A.B.
A bartender one weekend was rude, hostile, and aggressive. Granted, I cursed him out, but that was only after he told me he wouldn't take my order, threw beer at me, and told me to get sober. (Having just arrived, I had had nothing to drink yet.) - T.G.
I've been going to this place for quite some time now and its one of the better
pubs in the city. The bartenders are all good and attentive. The waitresses are attentive and move pretty quickly. The place has two dart boards, plus its a great place to watch a game. The Men's room does SUCK. It was just redone, but they put back the little 3x3 door on the stall. Geez! Other than that, its a great place to have a few beers and hang out. I will say that the weekend bartender has no tolerance for people who prance in and are
smartasses. Neither do I. I've known him to be nothing but professional and I know that he'd never throw a beer at a patron, no matter how they behaved. Remember, treat someone with the respect that you expect to be treated with. Especially when the bar is packed. - A.G.
On each visit I have found the bartender to be amicable and attentive, and the atmosphere was friendly enough. But the earlier comment about the
men's bathroom should be paid heed to...word of advice, don't have spicy food before coming here. - B.C.

I live a couple of blocks from McCann's and go about
once a month, usually on a Friday or Saturday night. The staff is
excellent, friendly, and courteous. McCann's is a great place to
go to escape the winter cold or the summer heat. Plenty of room
for people to sit and relax, mingle etc... Excellent selection of
drinks on tap, especially the Magner's Cider, which you can't get
everywhere. Bar menu is also EXCELLENT. For 6 bucks or so you can
get a great big bacon cheeseburger with fries and onion rings
included! Also nacho plates and buffalo wings made to order. Its
not the kind of local bar where you go in and everybody looks at
you like "hey, what the hell are you doing here?"
Newcomers and regulars alike are welcomed. The crowd isn't a bunch
of dirty old men from the neighborhood either, mainly people in
20s and 30s. Great $1 pool tables in the back (free on Sunday
evenings) and wooden nickel drink buybacks! All in all, they
treat you well at McCann's whether you're there with one friend,
or eight. - A.

old Ryan McFadden's has been re-vamped and is making a
comeback. Quite possibly the most well-lit bar in NYC, it
is spacious and friendly...a great place to go after work. - J.M.
I love this place. Easy to get to, clean, and the best
bartenders. I love to start my Thursday nights here. - J.C.
A fun place with lots of classics and potential for harassment.
Good music, however, the DJ tended to spend too much time giving
commentary on microphone. Other than that, lots of fun, always a
good time. - L.A.P.
Great bar, great food, great beer and great chicks. - J.P.
Quite possibly the best consistently great bar on the east side.
Great crowd, fun women. Was closed for a few years, thank God
it's back. - B.S.
The restructuring of the "Irish Times Square" has taken
place. They say "You can never go home." McFadden's has
(with new partners). The place still resembles the old Ryan
McFadden's with the exception that the cocktail booths are
larger. Ryan McFadden's was frequently mentioned in the Daily
News when it was headquartered across the street. That probably
won't happen as much since the reporters would now need to travel cross-town to enjoy it. Well lit, it features numerous TVs, a DJ,
a high ceiling, large picture windows, and a dining room with a
pretty good menu. It's still connected to Calico Jack's Cantina
next door (f.k.a. Maguire's Cafe) with the common kitchen and
joint ownership. While Maguire's was always more of a sports bar,
McFadden's is now. Ryan McFadden's always drew a slightly younger
crowd than Maguire's - that's now reversed. The prices are
reasonable ($4 for a bottle of Coors Light). The service is
friendly and efficient. It can be difficult when it's very
crowded. The bathrooms are more than adequate. - T.K.
This bar ruled, however, the service blew chunks. I was there on
a Saturday night and the bartender was [bad]!! - B.R.

McFadden's is def. one of my favorite bars in NYC, with a combo of

School" rock songs blaring all night, a must go to bar.
Saturday night is the best!!! - R.J.
The place was OK. I expected much better after reading all the

the staff wasn't too friendly and the crowd was not nearly as

Had a great time there, and DJ "DeeLicious" is the hottest in NYC! - B.S.
McFadden's lunch hour has great service. They will get you in and out in more than enough time. Order their "daily specials". Nightlife is a whole other world. The
DJ's and bartenders are hot, the music is great and we had a private party there in their back room and
I got the best deal compared to NY and NJ. We only paid $25/head for three hour of
boozing. I love it there. - C.N.
Went to the bar on a weekday night in the summer. Had a blast. Definitely recommend going there for a good time. -C.O.

Relocated in 1996 when they got kicked out of their Ed Sullivan
Theater locale by the Letterman crowd, McGee's is now well
settled in to its new home around the corner on 55th Street. What
they lost in location, they make up for in space, in a long,
spacious place with high ceilings and an upstairs bar and dining
area. Redwood "Irish bar" decor and tile floors make it
seem like it has been around forever. - S.M.

Friendly Irish pub (it moved a

Theater). Good crowd (mostly after-work). Reasonable prices.
Restaurant upstairs, bar downstairs. Bar area good for viewing
sports events. - T.K.
Enjoyable experience. The bartenders were friendly and the
music was surprisingly diverse and current. At times, the
volume was a tad loud, but would definitely go back. - A.S.
Irish bar with no Guinness and a TV every 2 feet showing some
sport or another. The crowd is spent corporate goobers talking
loudly about nothing. The food is the same brand of mozzarella
sticks and chicken tenders you get everywhere else. Not the worst
place, but there's nothing to love. - S.G.
We and a group happened upon the second floor bar on evening. I
was there a few years ago but it's way different now. What was to

plasma! Oh Mama, I'm home! - J.C.

not to love?!? MCSorely's Ale, Brooklyn Lager, Carlsberg and Guinness on tap, friendly female bartenders that pour a hefty
Scotch and prices out of the Midwest in Midtown. The 1 lb.
burgers w/ a 1/4 1lb of bacon w/ perfectly crisp fries are a
great way to start any pub crawl. We started out here 4 nights in

I loved it! It's a step back in time. A classic "old man's " bar from the 70s. A great place to watch Yankee games with the faithful. My friend

Don't judge it by its outside appearance, it's a decent place. It
has tables in the rear for drinking and dining. The bathrooms are

stagehands and performers, it's frequented mostly by tourists and
theatergoers. It has reasonable prices and good service. - T.K.

- An
authentic old style New York landmark tavern since the mid nineteenth century,
McSorleys is a museum of drinking in New York. This place
had been making its own ale long before it was trendy. Serving
just "dark" and "light" ales in 9 ounce mugs,
it no longer brews its own, and you must order at least two at a
time. That should be no problem, because the waiters are capable
of carrying much more in their strong hands by strategically
interspersing their fingers between numerous mug handles. They
certainly work hard for their money, so treat them right. At one
time, this establishment forbade females, not even installing a
ladies room until the late 80s. Nineteen eighties!
Abe Lincoln is purported to have drank here, and if you look at
the wishbones collecting dust over the bar, youll believe
that this place has a long memory. The line gets long on
weekends, but the turn-over is relatively quick, as this place is
a must stop while in New York, but not a "stay all
night" kind of place. - S.M.
When you walk in it is a step
back in history. My scores are based on that fact. You feel like
you are with your grandfather on a Friday night and he is taking
you to his favorite establishment. When you look around it brings
memories from your childhood of times when you were with your
father or grandfather stopping in for a beer. This is a place I
will go back too. The nostalgia is worth the visit.
G.G.
One of the best "go out and get f*#*ed up" bars ever -
T.H.
By far my favorite bar in this city of ours!! I only knocked the
service down to a "9" since they yelled at us once, but
I usually respect their shortness since it is such a part of the
atmosphere of drink, drink, drink. It's not meant to be a pretty
place, but it's just so full of history down to those wishbones
still hung above the bar. Get a table. It's always a social crowd
and you'll make some new drunk friends. This place has been my
birthday tradition for years and I would take a non-New Yorker
here before the Statue of Liberty! Get the idea I like this
place? - A.R.
Since three generations of my family have learned how to drink in
this bar, I consider it the finest in the land. Head there
for lunch. Make the pilgrimage I'm making tonight. - M.S.
If you have a friend, family
member, acquaintance, stranger from out-of-town met on train, you
must, must bring them here. Plus it's another excuse for you to
go! Excellent place with only decision to be made is light or
dark. Perfect for the indecisive drinking connoisseur. -N.J.
When God came up with the idea of a bar, this is what he was
thinking. Stepping inside is like entering a time warp. Aside
from the television in back, there's little evidence that it is
2001. To borrow a line from "Field of Dreams," stepping
inside is like you've been "dipped in magic waters...It
reminds you of everything that was once good, and how it could be
again."
Everyone checks their attitude and their worries at the door, and
one gets the feeling they are truly surrounded by friends. The
service is a marvel in itself, watching one man carry twenty mugs
to a table. The food is simple, but always hits the spot (try the
chili). I could not think of a better way to spend a Saturday
afternoon than to sit at table full of friends drinking and
eating the afternoon away at this establishment. - L.T.
Oldest watering hole in NYC. It looks it, and that's just fine! -
S.S.
I have never had anything less than a grand time at this
"turn back the clock" bar. While ordering beers in
twos, or multiples thereof, from unsmiling but nonetheless quick
servers, I have broken out in song and talk with all kinds:
Germans, Irish, tourists, even guys from New Jersey who, in any
other bar, might have wanted to square up. Here, they were there
for the same reason I was: to drink and have a good time. And,
buy each other rounds of light or dark. - K.K.
Not just best bar in NYC, try America! - R.B.
I love this place! Great atmosphere, good crowd, and easy to get
really drunk rather inexpensively! I would definitely recommend
this place to friends! - A.F.
As soon as I sat down and started drinking my dark draught I felt
like discussing Grover Cleveland's presidential comeback. Many
bars have "nostalgic" themes but McSorley's is some
seriously authentic shit. From the pot-bellied stove, to the
wooden ice-box behind the bar you can tell this place hasn't
changed since it opened. Ale House is another phrase that many
bars throw about like so much confetti but, once again,
McSorley's is the genuine article. Dark and light ales is it. If
a hankering for a Long Island Ice Tea is what you have, drink
somewhere else. - A.S.
Anyplace that gets a 10 for atmosphere and a 5 for the bathrooms
has got to be good. Y'know when you get there before lunch and
leave at last call you have had a serious drinking experience. If
you have to go to a bar when you visit NYC and you don't go here,
you've made a serious mistake. - M.W.
As a girl, I even love this place. It makes any other bar
experience seem boring! But if you want to start your night here
and expect to make to another bar after McSorley's...forget it!
You won't leave here walking straight. - K.
Best bar in NYC to start a night at. It closes at 1am every
night! So get there early, get crooked on McSorley's light and
McSorley's dark and move on! Any bar that promotes two-fisted
drinking is a must! - K.D.
A place so historic and so cool to drink in, it even made it into
the movie "Rounders". Light or dark is it, but that's
all you need. If you haven't been there, I'm sorry. - R.S.
This place is a dirty dive bar. It was packed however. There was
no music, no nothing. There was dust and dirt everywhere. The
bartenders gave you two glasses of either light or dark beer and
you had to have two. However don't worry about getting drunk
because they give you about 1 1/2 inches of head on every beer.
It was ridiculous. If you go get a drink slam it and go somewhere
else, just so you could say that you went. If you are a male and
need to use the bathrooms try this on for size: 2 stalls and 1
urinal in a space about the size of a closet. - J.S.
Love it and we keep coming back. Great place to meet and talk with fascinating people. Love the cats too! -
D.M.
The oldest bar in New York rules! - G.R.
The building that houses McSorley's was built between 1860 and 1862. The earliest verifiable opening date for the Ale house is 1862. Reported in various issues of The New York Times since 1995, The Daily News, and the most recent edition of the American Institute of Architecture's Guide to New York City. -
R.M.
Great bars can be created or they can mature with time. This bar falls into the second category, having been established
in the mid-ninteenth century. To drink there is truly a privilege as this is certainly one of the best
bars in existence anywhere, and I've seen a few, believe me! Everyone should see
this place at least once. - C.H.
Come here if you wanna drink! At this bar, they keep 'em comin' and ole Tommy won't stop until your foot is out the door. Two choices light or dark, what else do you need? Cheese and crackers (with unions), good burgers. Amazing atmosphere.
You get a glimpse of New York history no matter where you're sitting. The bar is filled with articles, slogans, and tiny little things, to keep you occupied.

place is simply sleazy, attracting the worst kind of people of
Queens and Long Island. It's too dark in there, it has that
sickening 'lizard lounge' feel to it. I went there a few times
because my ex-girlfriend used to go there, but I hated it. But I
must say the bartenders are very nice and helpful! - D.M.
Good food, nice bartender, awesome karaoke on Wednesday with
the Lizard guy. He should be a star. - P.B.

Chelsea bar & restaurant with dark wooded interior. The

Split level in rear with eating upstairs and a cozy smoking

- Great
unknown sports bar in Hell's Kitchen. Lots on tap and full menu -
never had a bad meal. There when A.Houston beat the Heat and when
Clemens beat the Braves in Game 4. A real little-known treasure!
- K.C.
A nice Irish pub/sports bar in Hell's Kitchen, this is the west
side cousin of Joshua Tree on Third Ave. Bar, booths and tables
with velvet cushions on the seats. The walls are interestingly
painted. Jukebox, large screen TVs for sports viewing and music
videos. Good pub food. Midtown mix of after-work, tourists and
theatergoers. Friendly and efficient Irish bartenders. Reasonable
prices. Bathrooms in basement are adequate. T.K.

The Mercury Bar is a typical Irish bar located at
midtown east side. A great bar with good barmen and a lots of tap
beers, of course Guinness, Harp and Bass. They also have a very
large fare and late night menu. I suggest you to try the pizza,
which is delicious. The prices for the cocktails and the food are
also reasonable. - T.N.Y.
Pretty cool bar that draws a mid-to-late twenties style crowd. Large selection of tap beers. Bathrooms are clean and more space than what you'd usually find. -
A.S.
Have been here a few times and have never had a great time. Last time I was there the crowd looked really really young. One girl on line for the ladies room had braces. I left after I saw how ridiculously young everyone and I've never been back. -

- Great
place to see a band. The back room rocks. Good service, but
somewhat gloomy decor. - J.M.
Formerly a headstone parlor, now one of NY's best live music
venues. Has a long bar in the front room (as you enter) and a
stage with live music in the back room, which has a few tables on
the sides, but basically a standing room space. Does not serve
food, but its just down the block from the famous Katz' Deli. -

Good Music and the dimly lit decor allows for a relaxed
atmosphere. The divided rooms lets patrons listen to great tunes
or choose to drink more quietly near the bar. - T.S.

to but independent from the Days Hotel, this place is somewhat

Comments - Awesome spot. It changed over recently and it looks great. Some of the staff have stayed I am happy to say, Brendan is an excellent bartender and good to look at. Their food is good and nicely placed large screen TV's. But one other thing the music is great, the play lot of different types and are able to keep everyone happy which is hard to do. -
E.T.
This is the best new Bar on the east side- you cant beat the lay out, music and women that show up on a regular basis! They are real strict with ID so its a mature crowd too! -
M.M.
The only thing good about this place is the flat screens on the wall. I went on a Saturday and it was full of guys. I recognize some of the staff from
McFadden's, so it's the same annoying crowd transplanted from there. Has potential though. -
R.C.
This place in banging, definitely the best new place on the East side. Lots of room for
dancing, hot chicks to hook up with and service is extremely proficient. DJ Tubbs plays wide variety of music and keeps the place
bouncing. Definitely must see this place. - T.S.M.
As much as I like this bar to go to, I thought I should give a warning for anyone wanting to use the room for a private party. We had a birthday party there and it was anything but private. Anyone was allowed to come in, whether they had wristbands or not, and I never once saw the bouncers tell anyone that we had the room reserved until
1am. They had also promised food to be included and brought out one plate for the whole party. This bar is a great place to go to, but
don't use them for parties. With all of the private room options in the city, the hassle of this place isn't worth it. -
S.L.
This was the worst bar that I ever went to. They have signs on the wall that say
"No Dancing Allowed". The music was horrible and you have two old men playing it. The place had too many TV's and it was very jammed. I
wouldn't go back. - D.G.
Great place to get sloppy drunk and dance with girls, hot or ugly, preferably hot, but by the end of the
night does it really matter. I definitely will be back soon. Thank you Metro 53. -
B.D.
Worst bar ever! Two signs are posted that state "No dancing allowed" ( it is not a joke). The people there were very snotty, rude and
stuffy. The music was good (mostly rock) . it is a shame because the layout of the bar is awesome (2 floors) ,but the regulars ruin it. -
M.C.
Midtown's new hot spot is Metro. The place is crawling with chicks and the food is great. it is so big
I got lost in it. The music was great. The ID machine and dress code keep the riff raff out.
See you there. - T.F.
I had a great time. The place looked very up scale, and was clean. There was a good crowd with lots of beautiful girls. -
J.R.K.
I have gone to this bar a few times since it has opened, and I have had a fun time every night. The music and service are great. For me, it is key to have a bathroom that I can actually go to during the night, and theirs is well taken care of with an attendant most nights. I love the environment and would recommend it to all of my friends. -
K.A.
In my opinion, this bar was a little too crowded to have a good time, because I kept getting my drink spilled every time
it went somewhere. And if you're itchin' to dance, like I am, go somewhere else, there's signs everywhere forbidding those who boogie...So in all it felt a little too straight-laced for me! -
J.N.
This is a great place to pick up. Beautiful women and handsome guys. I love
this place. - E.T.
Nothing spectacular about this place. I have been here a few times on Saturday nights. The crowd is a little young. The place is way too crowded for my taste. Literally you have to wait 10 minutes just to get to the bar. It is really crowded but there is not a fun atmosphere. Everyone just stands around in their group. Plus how stupid that they have a DJ, but signs that say no dancing. Is that for
real!! I didn't see anyone dancing. I'll never go back. - T.M.
Umm...Where was the dancing? I did not see ANY dancing. I saw stuck up girls (who all look the same) and ugly guys (who think they look good) and way too many people crammed into one space. Also, do not expect to be able to move from the one tiny spot upstairs by the bar. They have private parties in every corner of this place.
- H.E.
Metro 53 has a great vibe to it, the service is great, the people are friendly, and the ID machine and dress code keep dirtbags out. I saw Wyclef Jean walk in there the other night, that should explain how nice a place it is. The "NO DANCING
ALLOWED" signs have no effect on the place, it still rocks out. Keep up the good work.
- B.S.
I am in LOVE with this place!!! Mainly, for one reason: A GORGEOUS bartender by the name of Richie. This young lad can serve me anytime!!!
- B.S.
First of all, this new bar is awesome. For all the idiots that don't know, it's against the law to have dancing in all bars. it's not because management doesn't want you to have fun, it's because they
have to. Everyone dances anyway, the music is played for everyone, hip hop, dance, eighties, old school, and rock.
The people who complain about all of these places shouldn't be allowed in them.
I'll be at Metro on Saturday night. - D.M.
This place is awesome. It's the only place in the city with some normal people and music in it . The guys who bartend there are really cool too and nice to look at. The music is great and
I went here once to eat with my friends and the food was unbelievable. This is definitely
my new place. - PBF
Oh my God, this place is such a good time. They make the best apple martinis - but don't drink too many. Or better yet, drink as many as you want. There's tons of hot guys there to make sure you get home ok. There's even a bartender that looks exactly like Emilio Estevez - he is so cute!! I love it !!!!
- A.V.
The place sucked, especially the bartender at the back bar who kept trying to pick me up with pathetic lines. Place was also too crowded, where
I couldn't even move. - J.D.
This is one of the best bars in the city. I recommend it to anyone. Some of the best bartenders around and the girls are ridiculous. If you don't believe just walk past the line on any Friday or Saturday and take a look for yourself. -
G.S.
This bar was fun until the "owner" of the bar GRABBED my friend's hand and had us escorted out of the bar by two big bouncers. This all happened because we tried to walk around the "owner" and he would not allow it! This was in the middle of the bar and we are two girls 5'2 about 115lbs (the "owner" was about 6'5). I have never been treated so rudely at a bar that is considered respectable. -
S.G.
Based on all the buzz I have heard about this venue, I decided to stop in and check it out - The
hype was right - it has one of the best layouts in the city, coupled with great staff, and outstanding music, there is no wonder why this place was
packed with great looking people! I strongly suggest that you come early to avoid the lines, possibly for dinner - the food was great - and stay late to see how the night unfolds! I had a great time and have been a regular on the weekend nights ever since! The
bar is great, the staff are amazing and the music ties it all together to make a great time - every time! - M.A.

place. Cocktails were around $7 or so and they were
generous with the liquor....beers were cheap...nice place w/young
crowd. Recommended. - K.P.
This is a four-in-one place. It originally was a two-story (a
ground floor, second floor, and a rooftop) bar and lounge. It has
since 'annexed' what was 'The Onion'. The former Onion part of
Mica (entrance on Second Avenue) is located on the second floor.
It features a wood bar, brick walls, a VERY LARGE screen TV, and
it's very dark. It seems to attract an overflow from other local
bars as its clientele. The prices are reasonable and the service is friendly and efficient. The
unisex bathrooms are one-at-a-time. The sunken ground floor is
also very dark (candle lit) and has a bar and a lounge. There's
no TV here. Rap music is played on the sound system. It also
seems to draw an 'overflow' clientele. The prices here are a
little more expensive and the
service is also friendly and efficient. The bathrooms are also
one-at-a-time. I was told there is also a dark bar and
lounge upstairs. The rooftop bar is not open in the winter.

- A
sports-themed bar & restaurant and midtown tourist attraction
which serves as a monument to old #7. Opened in 1988, its walls
are decorated with sports memorabilia, particularly Yankees, and
specifically Mr. Mantle himself, including rare photos from
Mickey's personal collection. Prices reflect its Central Park
South location, and its New York tradition. Hot spot to watch a
playoff game, particularly when the Yankees are in it. - S.M.
This is the famous sports bar
named for the Yankee legend where Bill Mazer broadcasts his radio
show. It has a rectangular bar (the bartenders all wear # 7 on
the backs of their shirts). It features a low ceiling (smoky),
several TVs (of course), dining tables, a retail shop (t-shirts,
etc.) and mellow music is piped in. The decor is very baseball,
very Yankees, and specifically lots of pictures of 'The Mick'.
The prices are expensive and
the service is good. The beer selection is limited. It obviously
draws a sports fans clientele and gets very crowded when an
important Yankee game is on TV. -
T.K.
My husband loves The Mick and loves Mickey Mantle's. He's like a
kid in a candy shop thinking about the summer of '61. If he could
have, he would have given The Mick his liver!!!! The atmosphere at
Mickey's is great. We like sitting at the bar or lunching at one
of the tables. The food service is very good and so is the food.
The "9" for service is when you're trying to purchase shirts, etc. They sometimes seem more interested in seating the
hungry people than selling the shirts. The bathroom is always
clean, but is too small. Also, sometimes a bit of a wait to get
into the restaurant...but just a few minutes. We always go back
to Mickey's place!! - L.D.

old place has been around for a long time. There is one TV, a
jukebox, and a decent pub menu. I went there recently to meet
some old friends. It's very cramped. The clientele is very
different from other local places. In addition to being much
older, it's a strange crowd. The 'entertainer' on the piano who
goes by the name of "Hunter" is definitely a little
weird. While the regulars seemed to like his act, I found him to
be a little gross. The barmaid who goes by the name
"Star" has a really bad attitude. The prices are
reasonable. The bathrooms
(located downstairs) are difficult to access. I certainly would
not recommend the place. - T.K.
I had dinner there with a first date at Mimi's. The waitress
dropped a plate of pasta with red sauce right on my lap. I was
wearing white khakis. The only thing I got was a glass of
seltzer. No offer to pay for dry cleaning, not even a free drink.
Needless to say, I never got a second date. - M.M.

- You
actually feel like youre in Miss Elles house, with
its rickety stair case to an upstairs dining area (formerly a
bedroom), apartment style bathrooms, and homey atmosphere. Famous
for its blender drinks. The regulars seem to frown on newcomers,
and the bar is a bit cramped, but the bartenders are top notch,
and their concoctions will have you thanking Miss Elle. - S.M.
From the living room-looking
bar area to the dining room in the rear, it resembles a country
inn. Small bar, slow but friendly service, limited beer
selection. Reasonable prices ($4 for a bottle of Beck's Light).
The one-at-a-time bathroom is called a water closet. - T.K.
This is a good joint for the "over 40" crowd. The bar
is in the front as you come in the door; the back and upstairs
are restaurant areas. The clientele is very mixed but very
friendly; some have been coming here for years, back in the days
when it was Julia's and the Only Child. Drinks are substantial
and fairly priced. Conversation runs between sports and the
esoteric. In all, it's perhaps one of the greatest joints I've
hung in during my (still short, I hope!) life. It's the kind of
place where you make friends, do "other stuff" with
them, get invited to their life events -- babies, marriages,
funerals -- and you can really feel like part of a group without
having to compromise yourself. Many who read this will probably
know it's quite a good place; those who haven't been there, I
recommend it. AND, the food is inexpensive, tasty, and plentiful
-- from the best meatloaf you've eaten since home to prime rib
and great pasta. Give it a shot. - N.43

the wings, they are gross. No such thing as buffalo style in the
Caribbean, only curry. S.B.
Whenever I make one of my frequent trips to NYC I always make it
a point to stop at Mo's. Though I am by no
means anywhere near being a regular patron there, the barman
always makes sure I have my seat available for me at the bar when
I return from the loo on a crowded night ( as I live in a
cesspool town to begin with - San Bernardino - any can in any
condition doesn't perturb me in the least, hence the
"9" for the toilet. ) - M.D.
Went there with a bunch of friends. Spent the whole night making
fun of the people in the bar. Most random and sketchy characters
go to this bar. A lot of sloppy drunks. If you want to have fun
there: when in Rome, do what the Romans do... - S.Y.
Please note that management has discontinued the NTN trivia game. Great place except when the bridge and tunnel crowd pull up in the bus. Good pool games unless excessively drunk early 20's girls decide it's their dollhouse. Bartenders are fantastic, and occasionally the lovely Claudia will get up and get funky on the bar, but look but don't touch guys, or one of the ample bouncers, especially Nick, will show you a close up of 2nd
Ave. Best time to go is summer weekends when it's mellow. - D.N.
Great decor and service are always present here. However, Mo's has kind of a Jekyll and Hyde complex. On some Fridays and Saturdays it can be very crowded and busy -- too busy to enjoy. On these nights the best thing to do is head toward the pool table for some breathing room and wait for the party to come to you. On the flip side, some weekends are the perfect mix of mellow and wild. The female bartenders and waitresses are very hot. The crowd is full of partying just-out-of-college types and sketchy drunks. During the week, Mo's is ALWAYS a good bet. For some reason people show up here during the week (especially in the summer). Definitely check this place out, because if you happen to go on a bad night, there are many other good bars in the neighborhood. - B.A.
Cool place to go after work and have a few drinks. On Wednesdays it is dollar
margaritas for the ladies - K.T.

Comments - I've
read reviews (not here of course) that called this place names
like 'dangerous', 'dive', etc. That certainly was not my
experience. The clientele when I was there at 6pm on a Wednesday
night was an older, mixed group of sports fans. This sports bar
looks like it has been refurbished recently. Perhaps the
clientele changed (or also were refurbished) as a result. Well
lit, it features numerous TVs, a jukebox, video games, a low
ceiling with fans, dining/cocktail tables, and a decent pub menu.
The prices are reasonable ($3 for a bottle of Coors Light) and
the service is friendly and efficient. The only negative that I
encountered was that the small, two-at-a-time bathrooms are a
little lacking. - T.K.
When I worked across from the Trade Center
I used to hit Mudville every week for the wings. They have a
Westwood Wings franchise, and also Triple XXX Buffalo wings,
Cajun wings, Jamaican jerk wings and some more mellow ones. They
also had Buffalo shrimp, bloomin' onion, burgers and roast
chicken. And great fries (cooked in oil and chicken fat). I like
the jukebox; it has a lot of classic rock. And they have a lot of
beer promotions. I have to make a trip over there again. And they
also had all you could eat and drink deals. A nice
bar/restaurant. - P.G.

Mug-Z's is the place to be when it comes to cheap prices and cold beers. Although it is a college bar, they accept Manhattanites who love to shop Arthur Ave. in the Bronx. Ask for Suits, he will let you in with a smile as long you are 21 or older. -

Comments - I stopped in here the other night last week and there were 5 or 6 people in here. It was 10 at night I needed to use the bathroom so I decided to order a drink. This is an
awful, depressing, old man bar. A really boring atmosphere. One wonders who runs this place and why? There is about a 50 year old Irish bartender with shoe polished dyed hair. I could not stop looking at his hair. He thinks he is about 20 years old. Pathetic guy! He was blasting techno and disco music trying to be cool and thinking back to 1970's I guess. There was a waitress at the end of the bar, not exactly a looker. She must have been saying to herself "ugh I work here". She probably should have done better in school. Why would anyone eat in here? Indeed no one was in there. As I finished my drink I walked out and felt better already. So if you are looking for a good time. It is fair to say skip this place. The bathroom was fine. Not exactly spotless but good enough to use. - P.M.
This well lit 'old man bar'. features several TVs, a jukebox, dining areas, low ceilings, and a private party room. The Irish bartenders are friendly and efficient. Unless I'm missing something, I don't know what the attraction is here. The prices are reasonable. The bathrooms are adequate. -

- While the outside façade would suggest a Blarney Rock type place, the interior doesn't resemble it. An Irish pub located in an area not exactly overflowing with bars, it draws mainly older commuters after work (it
is located not far from Grand Central). It features a long bar, high top and dining/cocktail tables, sports pictures on the walls, several TVs, munchies on the bar, a jukebox, and video games. The pub menu is pretty good. (I'm told it does a good lunch business). The prices are reasonable ($3.50 for a bottle of Coors Light). The Irish bartenders are friendly

- The
thing that sets Murphy's apart from the plethora of NY bars is
the service. Simply the best bartenders in town. I can't say
enough about the hospitality we've encountered there. When you
order a Guinness, you can rest assured that it will not only be
properly poured (the wait!) but also served at the right
temperature. They have a good jukebox as well with a nice mix of
rock and Irish music. Cheers! - K.H.
A midtown Irish pub, it could use some additional square footage.
Good jukebox, TVs. Like its next door neighbor (Jameson's) and
its across the street neighbor (Clancy's), this pub is a relief
from the younger, louder, more intense bars in this area. All
ages, mostly after-work patrons. Friendly and efficient Irish
bartenders. Reasonable prices ($4 for a bottle of Coors Light).

Hot place to meet people and have a good time if you don't mind

OK...this bar, aside from the door service, is terrible. They are

This small dive of a bar, which seems to be some kind of
a border between the trendy areas of SoHo and TriBeCa, seems to
draw a scruffy clientele. It features several TVs, a jukebox (not
played too loud), video games, shuffleboard, a high ceiling with
fans, and a high-top bar table that is partially inside and
partially outside. The prices are reasonable ($2.50 for a bottle
of Coors Light) and the service is decent. The one-at-a-time
bathrooms are graffiti laden. - T.K.
Neighborhood bar which serves mainly the people who work in the area: Telephone Co., Cops, Firemen, Court Officers, Postal Workers, etc. Tends to be a dark room, although light levels have increased since the owner added the
French doors in front. VERY friendly bar staff and clientele. Ambience is carried into the
graffiti-filled bathrooms which are small, serving only one at a time. Atmosphere is gruff, but privacy is assured. Occasional celebrities stopping in are not allowed to be harassed. (A customer is a
customer). BEST BURGERS IN TOWN! Chef is one of the best around! -J.C.
Great place if you are waiting for that pay day as well as a great place to start off. The
pitchers are cheap ($6 on Thursday and $9 on regular nights of Bud and Bud Light). Mixed crowd with very low ceilings. Recommend starting off there but not staying,

Like its neighbor, Summers, this place is an
indoor/outdoor beachfront bar. The clientele - It looks like the
Town of Riverhead emptied it's jails. The prices (for both drinks
and parking) vary with the weather. They like to use the line
"when it rains, we pour" to describe its bad weather
day 2-for-1 drink specials. The music is obnoxiously loud (The
deejays at Neptune and Summers try to outdo each other). The
grossness of the bathrooms varies from day to day. Still, the
beach scenery is great. - T.K.

band. Drink up and enjoy. - K.H.

with tattoos and no shirts, women with bikinis and heels. Music
is pumped up techno/bass remakes and club hits. Great location

A friend dragged me to this bar one Sunday night and I soon

Attracts a lot of European folk, especially Irish. Drinks are
reasonably priced, and they run lots of specials. Karaoke
prevails on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday nights and everyone in
the bar gets really into it and sings. Other nights they usually
have a pretty good DJ. I hate to write this because it could be
detrimental for the females, but what keeps me coming to this bar
is the selection of very attractive male clientele and the
minimum amount of beautiful women. - E.C.

has got to be one of the worst bar owners in the city of New

simply doesn't learn that he should pick another area of business

track records in the neighborhood so he can remodel a bar in his

This place was totally redone, inside and out, and looks a lot better than the Friday night fight club it was a few months ago. They improved the menu and beer selection and opened an OTB window. Some of the OTB gamblers look shady, but all in all, this place rates a return visit. - M.S.

This place was a lot more fun before it got renovated. It didn't try to cover up the fact that it was a dive bar (though still probably the nicest in
Rockaway at the time, which says a lot about this town) in a run-down area, with a
clientele of mostly old drunk men trying to hit on 18 year old girls. But it was always good for the end of a late night out in
Rockaway. Now, although it looks a lot nicer on the inside, it's actually become trashier than it was and has drawn in a weird, nasty looking crowd. I don't know if this is because of the off-track betting deal or what, but if
I'm forced to stay in Rockaway to go out on a Saturday night, I do my best to avoid
The Circle. - T.H.

I bumped into the bartender in the Redwoods while on vacation. He
mixed a fine Captain Morgans Rum & Coke. He was always polite
and though he smelled of burning embers his eagerness to serve
and professionalism set him apart from most that I have
encountered. His bathroom, a redwood tree in excess of 200 feet
high was very clean and in good order. There were no names carved
or scribbled upon it and for that matter, no toilet paper on the
floor. The decor was 5th century BC Old Growth Retro with a late
20th century fire pit kitschy flair. At one point he rose upon an
enormous stump and began to gyrate wildly as if possessed by the
spirit of the old forest or perhaps that of some mythical Pagan
beast. My transcendental experience at the Niagra though
Metaphysical in nature, has left me with a very good impression
of the bar. Pass the Captain Morgan's & Coke. - E.C.S.

The secret of this place is the fabulous food. One of the best

I visited this place on the MurphGuide pub crawl. Located on the corner, it has a good view.
The dining area is not separated from the bar area. This can get
awkward. It has a pool table with some seedy looking individuals
playing. Since there were two bartenders on duty, the service was
good. The happy hour was 'two for one'. I suspect, as in many
places in this area, it was not originally a bar. The bathrooms
left something to be desired. - T.K.

Located in the lobby of the Novotel Hotel. Doesn't seem like a bar. It seems more like an
extension of the hotel lobby (it is). Obviously run by a
corporation (not by saloonkeepers). Service is good. Very
expensive (as most hotel bars tend to be). Bathrooms very good
(they are in the lobby & are for the use of all visitors to
the lobby). No entertainment. For those who don't like the bar
atmosphere (and I don't know how many such people visit this
website) it's for you. T.K.

Comments - This
place is truly sleazy-- and no, there is no camp value to its
sleaziness whatsoever. The jukebox is decent, though, and if you
can find an unwarped pool cue, feel free to rack 'em up. - M.B.
If your inclination is to rage with no regard for your own safety
or for those around you, then this bar will be right up your
alley. Be prepared to rage like no creature has ever raged
before. - M.G.
Any place with a bartender named Vegas is good for me. He's
hot, too. Beers are cheap and the staff is not afraid to make fun
of you. - D.D.
A true place to fall off the edge of the earth. Can get
rough but the booze is cheap and the bartenders funny (as long as
you tip). Pool and darts, open late. - C.M.
I wouldn't come here at all but I am forced to since the pool
league plays here. A dirty messy place! - R.P.
A true hole. The place was probably beautiful twenty years ago but now has the seedy charm of
a Raymond Chandler novel. Cheap, and can be entertaining,
depending on the barman. I've been several times and seen the
best and worst, but the employees earn their money. Cross section
of Columbia students, local shit-talkers and
"hard-living" Europeans w/out Daddy's credit cards
frequent the place. Watching the barmen keep an eye on the small
but always moving clientele was an exhausting show. On two
different occasions, with two different bartenders, I witnessed
them throw a guy out of the ladies room while serving booze and
stopping a brawl on the pool table. - B.L.
If you like a bar where people are using
and selling drugs inside and out. This is the place for you.
Don't say I didn't warn you! - H.L.

Comments - The only highlight of this place is the bathroom, which in itself was irritating, but let's begin from the time I got in. A friend of mine and I were going to catch a flick in Union Square. I'm walking down Second Ave., and see three bars, the first two are closed so I phone my friend and tell her that I'll wait for at this place. The doorman is playing with scratch and play lotto tickets barks at me to show
ID. I've bartended so I didn't stress it and of course did so. I go in and the only people at the bar is this weird looking guy and the bartender. She glanced at me when I came in and was cleaning bottles. I made myself comfortable at the bar, and she still continued to clean bottles and I wait to be approached, so instead I approach her and before I open my mouth, she goes "Yes!" I'm like yeah, can I have a coke. She charged me two bucks, and I gave her an extra two dollars tip. She counts the money and sucks her teeth as I walk back to where I was. Well I'm
looking for matches for my cigarette. I ask the bartender for matches. She tells me she doesn't have any more. I decide to hit the bathroom, which sucks because you can't really see anything because of the dark red light, but it was clean, then again there really wasn't anyone there on a Thursday night. As I walk out I see the hack from earlier sitting on this couch having a "moment" with himself. I jet out of there and phoned my girlfriend to meet me at the theater.
DON'T GO TO THIS PLACE!!! - K.B.
This East Village establishment is more club than pub. It features several TVs, cocktail tables, disco music, picture windows, couches,
red walls, and a low ceiling (smoky). It seems to draw an obnoxious, twentysomething clientele.
The prices are expensive ($6 for a bottle of Amstel Light). The bathrooms are one-at-a-time. I was there early in the evening, so the doorkeeper was not an issue. The female bartenders were OK when I was there. It's not my kind of place. -
T.K.
I was there once on a Friday and once on a Saturday. Great Music! DJ plays the best old school hip hop and house. One of the best DJs I've heard! Crowd was sexy on
Fri. Crowd was urban on Sat. - F.L.

in the Southgate Tower Hotel. It draws hotel guests, MSG crowd,

- The
name is about the only thing about this bar that isn't original.
Located at the corner of 9th Street and Avenue C, this
rockabilly-punk bar is probably the highest-octane hootenanny
around. The place is always packed to the gills with pompadours
and mohawks, and the beer selection includes Lone-Star and
Blackened Voodoo amongst a slew of other specialty items. Be sure
not to miss this one. - M.B.
I wish I could give 11's but it only lets me put
10's......Coolest bar in the city. If you haven't been there yet
don't bother (stay in the uptown bars). We like it the way it is.
I'm sure all the trendies will be heading over to Ave. C soon
anyway. - C.L.
Walked in with a clean button-down and jeans on a Wednesday
night/Thursday morning. Thought I was going to get beat
up. The pictures of naked women covering the walls at this
bar are a nice touch. Scary place. - J.C.
If you're too scared of the place, good! Go to the Finoccio bars
that litter Ave. C like spent Euro-trash these days. We're a
great dive bar. We're NYC, not the midwest, you rednecks.

This is a semi-underground sports bar (thus the name)
that draws a good, all ages crowd from the surrounding
neighborhood. It features several TVs, a good jukebox, high-top
bar tables, a low ceiling (smoky), darts, and miscellaneous
sports decor. It may not be pretty, but it's fun. The prices are
reasonable ($3 for a bottle of Coors Light). The service is
friendly and efficient. The bathrooms are adequate. - T.K.

Formerly one of the greatest dive bars in the city, this bar was
unfortunately converted into a health-food bar (don't ask). It's
still OK to drop in if you're looking for a cheap drink in a
not-too-crowded venue with some interesting local color. Be sure
to lament the departure of the pigs if you go, as the previous
incarnation was perhaps the only swine-themed bar ever.- J.S.L.
Formerly the Swine on Nine. The statue of the pig is gone, but
the patrons more than make up for it. Any comparison to the 'Star
Wars Bar' is an insult to aliens from any galaxy. - T.K.
Well I can't say I've been in there since it was the SoN, but let me tell you about one night in the SoN. Went with friends and somehow hung out with an illiterate Norwegian headbanger, a guy who said he was in the Shondells and called Billy Idol "a good guy", a few leathery barflies, and a whole bunch of local homeless people. Star Wars cantina is right on. How could you go back once they change the place?

Name night gives you the chance to drink free all night - usually
have names like Alocius and Xuxa on the weekends, though. - S.A.
A total dive bar. However, a great place to watch Sunday Football
& drink cheap bear. A great place to drink before heading
over to Irving Plaza for a concert. They dont serve food,
but they will provide menus for ordering
excellent! - J.R.
I've only been there for Knicks playoffs games, and it's
excellent for that. There's a big screen TV in the back with
seating, a pool table, and, you know, beer. The crowd is
pleasant. A basic, good sized bar. - S.G.
This Flatiron area sports bar seems to draw a good,
twentysomething and thirtysomething clientele. Well lit, it
features several TVs (1 large screen), good tunes (not played too
loud), a high ceiling, miscellaneous sports decor, a back room
with a pool table, and a long bar. The prices are reasonable ($4
for a bottle of Coors Light). The service is friendly and
efficient. The bathrooms are adequate. - T.K.

A nice, low-attitude bar in TriBeCa, with a large adjacent music
room featuring a live salsa music on Saturday nights. Although it
does not serve food, they encourage you to have food delivered
from many of the neighboring restaurants by offering a book of
take-out menus. The bartenders are friendly, the neighborhood is
hot, and the bar has large picture windows, where you can watch
the crowds as they enter, or come & go from many of the
neighboring establishments, such as El Teddy's, The Bubble
Lounge, Liquor Store Bar, Tribeca Tavern, etc. - S.M.
This bar is average but the night I went they had a Cuban band
playing in the next room (adm. $10) and it seemed very happening.
An eclectic crowd for race, age, and fashion. Great place to
people watch. - K.B.

Formerly Pearce's and Cherokee's, this place has undergone a major transformation.
It is now a dark lounge with fancy furniture. The name means North of Northern (Blvd.)
It has not yet developed a following, but it is still fairly new. My personal preference is pub rather than club. The prices are reasonable and the service is decent. The bathrooms are better than previously. -

Comments - This is
a decent size bar in a bed & breakfast hotel. It's located
two blocks from the beach. It looks like it was somehow moved
here from the Irish Catskills. The lively, fun clientele are
mainly Irish-Americans of all ages. The live music acts are of the
sing-along variety. There are happy hour specials. There are
cover charges at certain times. The bartenders are friendly and
efficient. There are two bars in the place. It also has
dining/cocktail tables and high-top bar tables. There is a pub
menu. There are also video games, darts, and a pinball machine.
There are TVs for sports viewing. The prices are reasonable and
vary from one time to another. The bathrooms are adequate. Like
most places at the shore, it closes at 2AM. Beware, Avon is a
very small town. There are 2 bars in town (this plus the
Columns). Guess where the police cars are positioned at night?
They are thorough. Also, the cabs coming from towns south of here
are reluctant for fear of getting stuck at the drawbridge. - T.K.
