Penn Station (Amtrak level) | 5.3 | 6.3 | 5.3 | 5.7 |
Comments - This is
the best bar in Penn Station. Nicely decorated and cool
bartenders make it a great place to stop in if you're waiting for
your train. The one drawback is that is closes
early. Once the after work & Madison Square Garden
crowd has died down, it's time to go. - J.M.
If you have to wait a long
time for a train (going to the Jersey Shore in the summer), this
is a pretty good place to do it. This well-lit, pub-like bar
features several TVs, a jukebox (not blasting), low ceilings
(smoky), a marble-top bar, booths, and glass partitions. The
prices are reasonable and the
service is good. The bathrooms are adequate. - T.K.
I would like to comment on the fact that bartenders make the atmosphere of an
establishment. This place used to be great. I used to stop in on my way home from work and always get great service and a laugh from
the bartenders there. My drinks were always made to perfection. My two favorite bartenders were Angelo and John. Angelo was always very quick and efficient. John, well,
all I can say is he was the best. No matter how down I was, he could always bring a smile to my face. John had some sort of ESP and always knew what to say and make for me. I think I tried more delicious drinks there than anywhere else. Leona was also a very good, although sometimes quite bartender. As for now, I don't know what has happened. It is the opposite. I can go in happy, and walk out miserable. Either I am ignored, or the bartenders look as if they don't want to serve anyone. This place went from a 10 to a flat zero. It goes show that Bartenders truly make the place. - P.S.

The newest addition to the west side scene will not
disappoint. Soon to be one of the top 10 bars in the city. - K.R.
This is a new bar and it was wild. Me being a homosexual I felt
like I could just be myself. There is a good selection of draft
beers and the crowd is very diverse. This place is only going to
get better. - B.T.
A cool bar with plenty of pretty people. The music is not my
style, but everybody else there seemed to be enjoying it. The
food is very good. A cool bar in a neighborhood that needed it. I
will be returning. - J.P.
Laid back. Has hot food, though a little greasy. Yummy drinks.
Service is genial but slow. - J.K.
Great place to relax and have a drink, without people giving you
an attitude. - P.B.
We had a great time there the other night. Good food and drinks.

Great place in Chelsea to grab a drink without having to deal with any attitude.

Chop House (Avg. of 3 reviews) |
72 W. 36th St. (between 5th & 6th Ave.) | 7.0 | 7.7 | 8.0 | 8.0 |
Comments -
One of the best examples of "old NY", Keen's caters to expansive appetites (at a cost, of course). Besides their impressive signature dish, the mutton chop (and if you haven't had it, you should go out of your way to try it), they stock cigars, a large selection of single malt scotches, a wide-ranging wine list, and enough atmosphere to make you think you've gone back in time. Only downside would be the large crowds that gather there before a Garden event. Not only do they have two distinctive dining rooms and a large, comfortable bar, they have several very atmospheric private rooms upstairs. This is a very NY place, well worth a visit. -
G.L.
This
place has been around for a long time. The bar and the restaurant
are separate. The bar area features several TVs, low playing
music, a low ceiling with fans, an interesting painting behind
the bar, and miscellaneous early 20th century decor. While there
are some after-work drinkers, it's mostly people (of all ages)
waiting to dine in the restaurant. There is an extensive beer
selection. The prices are reasonable. The service is friendly and efficient. The bathrooms are
more than adequate. - T.K.
Steaks, forget about it, as
good as they come. As for the bar scene, this is a steakhouse,
not a frickin' place to grab a few drinks and meet some people.
If you come here to meet anything but a steak, you've got to
re-evaluate your entire existence. - J.S.B.

| Kettle of Fish (Avg. of 4 reviews) |

-
Kettle of Fish moved from 130 W. Third Street and reopened at 59
Christopher Street in June of 1999. The old space on W. 3rd
is occupied by a new and different bar. They are NOT the same
bar!
Kettle of Fish originally opened on McDougal St. in 1950 where it
was the watering hole of Kerouac, Ginsberg, Corso, Dylan and many
other 60's artists, poets and musicians. They moved to W. 3rd St. for 12 years and moved most recently to 59 Christopher
St. It continues that great artistic and literary tradition in the
site of what was once the Lion's Head, home of Norman Mailer,
Pete Hamill, Frank McCourt, Joel Oppenheimer and other celebrated
writers of the Village. The Kettle features a back room with comfortable couches, large
screen TV, eclectic juke box from Armstrong to Lucinda Williams
and darts which hosts weekly league games among some of the top
ranked women dart players in then nation. Annual events include
the Pumpkin Carving Contest and Christmas Carols where all are invited to participate.
Also, the owner is a life long Packer fan (he even
owns a share!) and football season brings "Green Bay
Packers, Cheese & Crackers" for all who join them on
game day.
See Fred McDarrah's book, Beat Generation: Glory Days in
Greenwich Village (at the bar) for photos of the Kettle, Lions
Head and personages that still frequent the Kettle such as Nick
Toches, Stanley Crouch and other writer, poets and artists. - D.H.
The Kettle of Fish is what every real bar should be. The Kettle that I know & love is about salty bartenders who have great one-liners, it's about one of the most
impressive jukeboxes I've seen in a while, and it's about having the most eclectic group of people I've seen gather in quite a while. As for the owner, not only has he kept a legendary bar going (one that he worked
at for twenty years before taking over), he has preserved the memory of The Lion's Head, another historic bar where The Kettle is now housed.
- L.R.
The Kettle is the only real Packers bar in New York City. The show every Packers (and Badgers games, too!) game, and the beer is cheap and always flowing! - F.2.
One of the best "bars" in town. There's a minimum of the usual b.s. Most who come just want to have a drink and maybe some good conversation. The bartenders are friendly, the jukebox is decent and the beer flows until 4. The
clientele is made up of regulars. They know when you don't belong, so don't make a spectacle of yourself. It's a "Bar", that is mostly what I have to say about it and it is high praise indeed. - M.M.

Comments - A
friend introduced me to the place, so while up for a visit six
months later, I went in and Kevin remembered my friend. When I
finally moved to the area five months later Kevin not only
remembered me but so did the bar staff, and most importantly,
they remembered my drink. Kevin's is the best bar I've been in
(and as the daughter of a bartender, I've been in a few).
You automatically feel at home, and that is what makes it the
best home town pub around. Cheers. - K.S.
The bartenders at this place are awesome. They remember not
only me but what I drink. It is a great little place with good
music. I tried the KSJ steak and it rocks. Definitely worth
the trip from Jersey. - M.C.
I loved this place! Big roomy bar, fireplace, great music,
and the staff couldn't have been nicer. Great for a
post-theatre cocktail. The one drawback is the small bathroom -
it doesn't measure up to the rest of the bar. - J.M.
They literally roll out the red carpet for you at this Hell's
Kitchen Irish bar. Friendly bartenders and waitresses make the
mixture of tourists and regulars feel welcome. Fireplace and a
private snug in the rear add a little coziness. Also serves
decent pub food. - S.M.
Very popular with an after-work, theatergoers, and tourists
clientele. Fireplace, good music (not too loud), friendly and
efficient Irish bartenders. (they must be Republicans - they have
memories like elephants). Reasonable prices. Bathrooms are small but adequate. - T.K.
A great bar with good food and drinks. Service is their strength,
friendly and fast. All staff welcome you and make you feel at
home as soon as you step inside. Fun at the weekends, always busy
and bursting with atmosphere. - O.E.
This bar is off the hook. Killer DJ rocks to some of the
most bizarre mixes I've ever heard. Where the hell did this place
come from? One night its a mellow, quaint Irish pub and the
next night you have some lunatic chicks dancing on the bar
kicking your drink into your lap. Real freak show.
The couple of nights I was there [on vacation from life] I saw
every mix of people under the sun jammin', there was Broadway
folk, actors, stagehands, slew of Irish hotties, firemen, hot hot
flight attendants, ....whatever, I didn't hook up. I met
some chick that I thought I would hook up with but after buying
her 20 drinks she broke down in tears about how much in love she
was with this bartender. Can't win 'em all. Final
note, the owner, some tattooed chap named Kevin, is absolutely,
positively, undeniably off his rocker. Nice kid. Remembered
my name. I like that. - J.W.
I've been to many bars in NYC, having lived and worked here my
entire life. A few weeks ago I was out with some guys from the
firehouse. We started at one and while there met a few girls who
asked us to go to a bar called Kevin St. James. Never heard of
it. I was completely amazed at the service, the crowd and that
such a great bar was in the "new" Hell's Kitchen. I
would give the bathroom a better rating only if I could remember.
Had a great time! - C.J.M.
Wow!!! I used to go to O'Lunney's a number of years ago until they demolished the building that they were in
and build the Reuters Building. Amazing that I've not seen
Kevin in many years and he remembered me very well. George
is a very friendly bartender and did his best to make sure that
we were well taken cared of the whole night. The place has lots
of different kinds of people strolling in and out. Nice girls to
look at and have good convos. My drink never hit bottom before
there was another waiting for me to pickup. Amazing service!
Highly recommended in the Hell's Kitchen area. When I found the
O'Lunney's on 47th St., Hugh mentioned to me to make some time
and go see Kevin at 8th Ave.. I never had any opportunities to
go. I'm sad that I didn't make the time, because that's where I
should have been going all this time instead of straight home. -
B.R.
I drive all the way from
Virginia Beach, Va. just to hang out at Kevin's on Friday and
Saturday Nights. You can't find a bar of this quality anywhere in
Va Beach. The people, the food, and most of all the relaxed
social atmosphere that Kevin's provide makes the 7 hour drive
worth it. -S.P.
No other place like it. Awesome
service, unbelievable bartenders, and a kick ass atmosphere. -
J.P.
To my favorite bar in New
York, in the year I lived there the service was so excellent at
times I didn't even have to go to the bar for a drink, let alone
even order one, the drinks just kept on coming! To all the girls
who I miss greatly plus a big hello to the bartenders, and of
course Kevin. I brought a lot of business your way over the year,
don't forget it as my friends still drink there. It's a great bar
with the BEST staff in the world, I miss drinking there with my
friends and I hope to see you all soon. -O.U.K.
What an atmosphere. There were a whole
bunch of firefighters staying in The Paramount just around the
corner from Kevin's (all a long way from home trying to be of help
following the WTC tragedy). On a couple of evenings we went there
to try and unwind. We were given one of the warmest welcomes (and
a few shots) I have ever been given in any bar I have ever
visited. Thanks Kevin and the great bar staff for making my stay
in NY memorable not just for the memories of Ground Zero. -P.M.F.
This place is awesome. I went to NYC on vacation and this was the
first place we went to. When we walked in the bartender made us feel immediately at home. They gave the whole bar a shot
and were friendly the entire night. I love this place. I would
definitely recommend it to everyone. The crowd is accepting of
all ages so go and have fun. - D.
The best bar in the world. - F.K.
I read the reviews here and had to try Kevin's for myself. I came
from Philly for my birthday, I had such a great time. Bartender
Andrea was great. I had to meet Kevin because every one speaks so
well of him: Kevin, you have the sweetest smile! What a place, I
recommend it to anyone who wants to meet great people and be
treated like a regular even if it's your first time. Thanks guys
for making my birthday so fun! Love Kevin St. James, Love Kevin!
Met some great people, loved the atmosphere, Sage is great!
Thanks guys, I'll be back! - L.C.
Kevin's will always be my favorite bar. I have so many wonderful
memories from there, there's never a dull night. Even driving all
the way from North Jersey is totally worth it. Thanks to Kevin,
George, Andrea, and all others for making us feel welcome every
time. Love you, guys. - A.
This is one of the best bars in NYC, there is a great crowd there almost every night, interior is comfortable and there are several TV's including the 12' projection screen showing almost every major sporting events. The staff at this place make you feel right at home, always attentive and make the place somewhere to come back to. Don't forget the food, reasonably priced and tastes great, real quality menu.
- T.J.C.
Not much more that can be said that hasn't already about this bar. It's a great establishment, with a friendly staff, affordable prices and decent food. Only complaint is that the bathrooms are a little small. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. -
A.S.
What a great place - been going here for a year now, and I'm in love with the staff! Great service, great music and the most beautiful waitress
I have ever seen! Sinead rocks! The owners a bit of a loose canon but there's always one freak. Enjoy it! -
J.W.
Very friendly bar with excellent bartenders who always make you feel welcome.
- B.C.
The ambiance rocks, a glowing space of votive candles and rippling colored lights on the
wall, paired with quality music (everything ranging from Dirty Vegas to Duran Duran). If you feel like you're going into a daze after the
never ending flow of quality draft beers, rest assured that you'll have plenty to focus on. From the very attractive bar staff, to the "good times" collage on the wall, an assortment of pictures, pop-culture, and memorabilia from the bar and the city. I've never gone without getting a free round, a seat at the
bar, and a nod of recognition from the bar staff. Bathroom is a little small, but has a good mirror with nice lighting. Going to this pub makes you feel like you've been there a thousand times, and want to go back a thousand more. Always an added bonus when
Terrance, Peter, or Kevin are bartending. -

Great Irish bar with a vast array of beer selections which are

book and film A Clockwork Orange, Korova is a long dark

A pretty cool east village bar. The decor, while not as close to
the "korova milk bar" from A Clockwork Orange
as I wish it were, is still very cool. I especially like the
funky lounge chairs for two and the weekend drink specials - a
shot of Cuervo and a Corona for five bucks on Fridays can't be
beat. - L.S.

This dark East Village bar/lounge obviously was once something
other than a bar. It seems to draw a twentysomething clientele.
It features cocktail tables, couches, a low ceiling (smoky), and
a DJ in a back room. The prices are reasonable ($3 for a bottle
of Amstel at happy hour). The beer selection is somewhat limited
and getting the bartenders' attention can be a challenge. The
unisex bathroom is one-at-a-time. - T.K.

Popular with tourists, theatergoers and after work crowd.
Frequented by NY Post reporters. (Steve Dunleavy looks much older
in person). Interesting pictures on the walls. Good buffet.
Reasonable prices. - T.K.
A surprisingly good place for lunch or dinner in the Theater District, with enough elbow room at the bar and at table. Reasonably priced food that is reasonably good and generously portioned. Definitely worth a stop. -

During a trip from Wales and Dublin we dropped in here and it became our local.
Great service and good prices, staff were fab, especially Niall & John. They had our drinks ready as soon as we walked in the
door, extra special treatment to the Celts. Cool place. We recommend it to everyone and we'll be calling in again when in NYC. - L&J

sketchy ally entrance gives way to the classiest restaurant and
lounge on the Lower East Side. The food is pricey, but worth it.
Don't miss the Lansky salad or the Sea Bass Wellington. The
atmosphere is sophisticated, but relaxed. Their only downfall is
that the B&T crowd is starting to find it on the weekends. Oh
well, it is tough to keep a good secret like Lansky's quiet. P.S.
the giant $10 martinis are amazing - S.G.
I thought the bar was really
nice, inside that is. The walk into the bar was absolutely
terrifying and the attacking RATS, yes, real live rats, were
disgusting and definitely not what you need leaving a bar at 2:00
am. The waitress and manager were not the nicest people in the
world either.- I.G.
Decor is outstanding. Weekends are getting busy. Don't let the
alley-way keep you away.
This place is the hot spot! It is always bumpin', and there are

Comments - Nice,
upscale place, but has its faults. Went on a Thursday night
and it was packed. Yuppie crowd. The decor and layout is
really cool. it was pretty easy to get a drink at the bar, but
the waitresses weren't very friendly and were a hassle trying to
deal with. They were slow and unhelpful. The bathroom
was nice, but I hate having to tip someone for handing me a paper
towel. Overall an OK experience. - K.P.
The way to get stellar service at this place is you look like you
are slumming. (A tough thing to do at an upscale place like
this). But if you can pull it off, the otherwise indifferent wait staff will be duly impressed and jump to your beck and call. -K.B.
Visited Light June, 2001 for a corporate get-together (10 people
from work, paid for by the company, on a Tuesday evening, 7:00 -
11:00 pm). The theme here is that the name of the bar is
"Light" but it is very dimly lit. Had to let our eyes
adjust before we could walk down the stairs to bar level,
otherwise would have fallen flat on our faces before even
drinking a drop. Decor is simple and seating is comfortable. Not
crowded (even for a Tuesday, it was quite empty). Generic
recorded music was at just the right volume for my taste, only
had to raise your voice a little to have a conversation. As you
would expect, prices are too high, but this was an expense
account junket, so who cares? This is a good place for that sort
of thing, or perhaps for a discrete rendezvous. - R.K.

This has the feel of a neighborhood bar. Drinks are affordable,
$15 all you can drink of Coors & Bud Light on NFL Sundays and
subdued crowd makes it an enjoyable place to watch a game without
the loud-mouthed drunks. TV's could be a bit bigger and they
could use a big screen. Staff is friendly and waitresses are very
cute, almost Britney-like. Bathrooms are okay, nothing special. - A.S.
This place is awesome! A mixture of people from grad students to young professionals, to neighborhood people to tourists to late night shift people on their dinner break. I always meet the most interesting people there. The best part might be the staff. Always friendly, great for conversation. The
dudes rock and roll & the chicks kick ass. Check it out...Great happy hour too!
$2 pints of Coors and Bud, well drinks and wine $4 pizza, wings and Nachos. -

At last, a REAL bar has come to Morningside Heights. Unlike it's neighboring establishments, this place is
clean, cheap and not excessively crowd with underage college kids. I've lived uptown for almost two decades and for the last five years have found myself traveling downtown for a drink.
The guys at Lion's Head have answered my prayers. The drinks are dirt cheap!
Where can you get a pint of Guinness for $2?? The food is simple, but good (and the kitchen is open till
2am). The bartenders are young veterans and still believe in buybacks. The decor could use come serious work, most of the walls are bare, but the atmosphere is real casual. they have two bathrooms which
( I think) are unisex, I've never asked. Never the less, this is a great stop to relax after work or meet up with some friends. -
R.X.
Fairly new on the scene -- a nice, straightforward pub/bar hybrid. Good service, good jukebox, Guinness on tap and excellent prices ($2 happy hour 5-8 every week day). No frat types (yet). There are three TV's but they are not in your face, and mostly show the History Channel. This has become our regular bar in the Morningside Heights area. - G.R.

East side secret - cool loungy bar that feels like a cozy basement from the 70s.
Cheap drinks, chill DJs, pretentious hipsters are too busy talking on their phones to notice this 2nd

Oh my, how I hate this place. The door staff is rude, the crowd is worse. If you're not tatooed up one side and down the other, and even if you are, the regulars here will go out of their way to make you feel as uncomfortable as possible. This place is not cozy, relaxing, or fun. The only thing it has going for it is the occasional Adam Ant song... but you're better off just staying home with your own copy of Antics in the Forbidden Zone. - N.J.

Comments - The
place gets rockin' with a good crowd. Quite a few traders from CS
First Boston make their way over there after a tough day on the
market. A mid 20's, early 30's crowd. Serves as a restaurant/bar
in the early hours of the night, but the bar takes over towards
11pm. There aren't set nights of rowdiness. I've seen it rockin'
everyday of the week, but when its dull, it can get boring. Not
too big, either. They also have a raw clam, mussel and oyster bar
in the middle of the joint. Strange, but good if you like that
sort of thing. Hint: chicks don't like raw bars - so stay away if
you want some play! - J.W.
This place has a little bit of everything. This applies to both
the decor and the patrons. It has a Southern flavor with some old
(not old enough to be classic) worn out decor. They had not yet
taken down the Christmas lights (in March). It features several
TVs, a jukebox (not played too loud), high-top luncheonette
tables, and other odds and ends (include several live humans).
While the beer selection is somewhat limited, they serve drinks
with names like Mississippi Breeze, Redneck Martini, Huckleberry
Freeze, and Oyster Shooter. I was not bold enough to try any of
them. The food counter resembles a flea market vendor's
operation. Don't misunderstand, it was very entertaining. The
prices are somewhat expensive. The bartenders are far from professionals. The bathrooms
are adequate. - T.K.
It's over. You could throw rocks down Live Bait's bar on a Friday night without hitting anyone. When even the die hard regulars are talking about "the bar it used to be" as they moan about the higher than average prices and non
existent buyback policy, it's no wonder Live Bait is dead. - R.K.

Small but comfortable Irish bar on the Lower East Side. Dark,

Great bar on the increasingly "hip" Fifth
Avenue in the north end of Park Slope. The place is huge, but
doesn't feel empty even with an intimate crowd. The front has a
nice long bar, big French doors looking out to the street, and
two good size TVs. The middle has the pool table, an eclectic
juke box, and good bathrooms. In the back there are at least a
half-dozen couches with coffee tables and draperies that kind of separates this end from the rest of the bar. The service is
usually excellent, but I have to say that the women bartenders
must be here mostly for decoration, because they aren't really
stealing the show with service. All the males make up for it,
though, with good service, a quick wit, and professionalism.
The crowd is mixed during the day and early hours. Weekends and
late-night is a decidedly younger and good-looking crowd in
general. A little SoHo/Tibeca/Village thing going on, but with a
good dose of Brooklyn down-to-earth style to keep everything from
getting pretentious. Really, one of the better places in this
part of Brooklyn, and the city. - L.S.

Non-stop partying at this Flatiron hot spot. Once you walk into
the place, you are immediately switched into party mode by a live
band that kicks ass on weekend nights. Hip crowd over-powers the
restaurant when the band is playing. This place rocks! Here is an
ominous sign, however: During a recent set by the band, the
guitarist quizzed the audience: "Is Manhattan in the house?
Brooklyn in the house?
.etc." The largest shout came
when he asked "New Jersey in the house?". No offense,
Jersey-ites, but this is a sign that the bar has lost its edge.
Bathroom would score higher if there was an attendant since it is
a nice facility but it gets sloppy on crowded nights. - S.M.

This is the new Manhattan sibling of the Brooklyn
tradition. It has two floors. The ground floor has a bar room,
the second floor is a restaurant. The prices are somewhat
expensive ($5.50 for a bottle of Coors Light) and the service is
good. It features several TVs, high-top bar tables, a high
