| The Gaf (westside) (Avg. of 4 reviews) |
401 W. 48th St. (between Ninth & Tenth Ave.) | 7.0 | 6.5 | 7.0 | 5.5 |
Comments - This is
the Hell's Kitchen younger sibling of the E. 85th St. Irish pub
of the same name. It seems to draw a good, mixed (all ages)
clientele. It features several TVs, a jukebox, darts, video
games, high ceilings, photos on the walls, bar bowling, high-top
bar tables, a lounge in the basement, and miscellaneous decor. It
makes good use of a limited amount of space. The prices are
reasonable and the service is
friendly and efficient. The bathrooms (located in the basement)
are one-at-a-time. -T.K.
Nice atmosphere, and NYC's best-kept secret for people
watching...but watch out for the bartenders. For the most part
they're sweethearts but some have been known to be extremely
disrespectful to customers. - K.F.
Small bar in Hells Kitchen, draws an older crowd. Reasonable prices. - A.S.
The Gaf's DOPE. No doubt. - R.P.

Comments - Came across this lounge on my way to another one. Stopped in and ended up staying for hours. Galapagos is a clean East Village Lounge with couches up front, a few tables in
rear and an outdoor patio in the back yard. They serve South American influenced cuisine.
The room is decorated with photos of the Galapagos and Ecuadorian tapestries on the walls.

| The Galaxy (Avg. of 4 reviews) |
15 Irving Pl. (corner of 15th St.) | 5.5 | 7.5 | 5.5 | 6.3 |
Comments - Although
it is in a great spot right next to Irving Plaza, this place has
little going for it. The stars on the ceiling are nice, but
the place screams confusion - It's a diner/restaurant that's
trying to be a bar. They should pick one of them and stick with
it. - J.M.
The Galaxy draws its crowd from the hip Gramercy area, and the
pre- and post-show crowds from next door Irving Plaza. The bar
area is like sitting at the counter of a galactic diner, with the
old fashioned diner stools keeping you grounded while the ceiling
takes you to the stars. A self-proclaimed global eatery, their
menu takes advantage of culinary ingredients from all over our
world. Plus, they are environmentally conscious, promoting
re-cycling and the industrial use of hemp. - S.M.
This is much more of a restaurant than a bar, but has amazing,
fresh food and each entree is less than $11 (even the teriyaki steak and wasabi mashed potato plate!) The service is spotty, but
the drinks are good so it's worth the trip. - S.A.
Can't smoke in bar. Bartenders and staff are very arrogant. - L.C.

| Garden
Tavern (Avg. of 6 reviews) |
407 Eighth Ave. (between 30th & 31st St.) | 6.7 | 6.5 | 8.2 | 5.2 |
Comments - Great
service if you are a regular (which would probably mean you've
been going there since you were 15) with the buy backs, but by
all means if you are not a dirty old man or a horny college guy
who digs many piercings and questionable fashion sense, avoid the
Tavern on Thursday's during the school year. It may be possible
to catch an STD just by walking in. Great for Knick games,
otherwise. - D.K.
I find myself at the Tavern at least once a week lately. This
place draws a mixed crowd, with a lot of Post Office employees
making it their after-work hangout spot. Thursday and Friday
nights finds the bar overrun by F.I.T. students, half of whom
look underage. (Not that there's anything wrong with it). A good
jukebox and friendly bartenders make up for the occasional shady
character or pretentious F.I.T. student you might run into. Overall, this is a solid
Eighth Ave. bar. - T.B.
I have been to the Garden Tavern many times in the last 10 years.
It is true that there are many young people in the bar on
Thursday and Friday nights, but it is a great place to hang out. If
you like to shoot darts this is the bar. The food is good and the
bartenders cheerful. The owners are very generous with the
buybacks. I have always enjoyed myself in this pub. Almost any
day you go there you will find friendly people, ready to party
and shoot darts. - R.R.
This sports bar serves as one of the many Penn Station commuter
bars and Madison Square Garden pre & post event bars. It gets
very crowded on certain 'game nights'. Popular with F.I.T.
students, it's not very crowded when there is no game. It
features several TVs, a classic jukebox (not played too loud),
dartboards, a low ceiling (smoky), numerous sports pictures,
partially exposed brick walls, dining/cocktail booths, video
games and tables in alcoves. The prices are reasonable and the service is decent. The bathrooms
are barely adequate. - T.K.
Amazing girls, all beautiful, especially Friday and Saturday nights, usually NO guys!! -
J.E.
Since the Garden Tavern underwent some serious renovations over the summer, I thought it was time to update the review. Darts are now located at the back of the bar, the jukebox has been re-stocked with different CDs, still an
eclectic mix. New lighting and benches have replaced the booths along the wall. Most amazing of all, one can now use the bathrooms without fear of catching some deadly virus. Crowd is still a mix of surly postal workers killing time before they head home and FIT students on the weekends. Once the kitchen re-opens, things should pick up even more. - T.B.

Comments - Located
in the Milford Plaza Hotel. Formerly "Honolulu
Steamship Company" and "Stage Door Cantina".
Entertainment some nights. (Karaoke on Fridays). Frequented by
hotel guests and theatergoers. Bathrooms are located in the hotel
lobby. They're locked. You must get an electronic key (card) from
the bartenders. Tthe bathrooms are often occupied by slow moving
tourists. - T.K.
Good place for cocktails (1 or 10+). Not your typical hotel
bar--if you didn't know, you wouldn't even realize you were in a
hotel. The beer is cold (no food, so don't come hungry), the juke
is great, and a pool table.... beat that in the area. And the
bartenders know what they are doing. Enjoy. -J.P.D.
Spent 2 weeks in midtown, and every night at Garvey's. The
proprietor and his staff of bartenders are apt and friendly.
Brogues aplenty and the regulars treat you like one of their own.
Beer prices are average and there is the occasional buy-back as a
bonus. Feel at home here. - J.K.V.

Lounging, diverse crowd, moderate prices. - K.D.
A cool lounge in the meat packing district, with antique
furniture, a long bar, many windows and occasional live music.
I have been going to the Gaslight for several years now.
Pete, one of the owners is a very friendly person, and always is
quick to make you feel welcome. If your a female, young and
beautiful, ask Pete where I am, so I can buy you a drink....
-B.P.
Fun, energy-filled space, funky downtown lounge atmosphere, good
looking crowd, bartenders personable, owners present and very
sociable. Highly recommend! -G.R.
Some really interesting friendly people. I also met celebrities
that were very cool and not stuck up. Great doors and antique
surroundings. -M.H.
Great late night spot, also a celebrity hangout without the
attitude. James Gandolfini and Ben Affleck are regulars along
with Mark Messier and his posse. - T.C.
The Gaslight is one of those cool bars with all the right
elements! The DJ plays some of the best music right out his
laptop computer! They NEVER close early, so when you're looking
for last call, stop by! - P.E.
Awesome place to chill, great loungy atmosphere with an eclectic
crowd. Good looking people...for superb late nights! - M.S.
Great place to meet friends or make new ones. Strong drinks, fun
upbeat music and all types of people. My fav. in NYC. - KDS

This is a good bar, it would be better if they had Coors Light. -
J.K.
The patio is unfortunately necessary to escape the over-loud
music inside. The English bartender is one of the unfriendliest I
have come across. Good selection of beers though. - D.L.2
I want to second the comment about the unfriendly bartenders. My
wife and I have stopped in this place on several occasions, never
been greeted in a friendly manner. Often felt like we were
intruding on a private party. Don't see what all the fuss is
about. Give this place a pass and try one of the other places
that have opened in this stretch of Park Slope. - G.T.L.

Hey, I love this place. At first I felt a little uncomfortable b/c the decor makes it look a little trendy, but after a beer I realized that it is an unpretentious crowd and that there was nothing to worry about. And that's what I love about this
place - you can take a buddy from Texas to have a beer just as easily as you can take a friend from Paris to have a martini. It is the only place in the city where I feel comfortable in jeans or in dressy clothes. Quality service from good people. Best of both worlds. - M.S.
I had two great nights in Gatsby's on my recent trip to NY. Thanks to Jason for some great times !! -
J.B.
Poor Restaurant, worker have no people skills. I would not suggest this a good place to hang out. -
D.B.
Great place to hang out for a couple of cocktails, or an all night outing. Very stylishly decorated, and best music around. Even though I am an out-of-

Midtown hot spot named after the literary character. Specializes
in microbrews and cigars, capitalizing on two mid-90's trends.
Packs them in on Fridays for after work happy hour, with
lines forming by 6pm. The lines disappear in the warm weather,
when the same crowd heads over to Bryant Park. Also serves bar
snacks. - S.M.
This a large, very popular
(crowded) bar/lounge. Very often, there are lines to get inside
on Friday evenings. They seem to draw a good twentysomething and
thirtysomething clientele. Since the music is kept low, and there
is no TV, conversation is easier here than at other places. It
features a long bar, cocktail tables, a lounge, a jukebox,
high-ceilings, dart boards, chandeliers, and a decent bar menu.
The bartenders are friendly and efficient. The beer selection is
extensive. Hopefully, the cigar smoking will lose its popularity.
The prices are somewhat expensive ($5.50 for a pint of Bud
Light). The bathrooms are adequate. - T.K.
If you care about good beer, you'll be happy to see $5.50 Imperial pints for most beers. 65 taps, only two or three devoted
to crap like Bud Light - which is there primarily to subsidize
the quality beers. No better tap lineup in the city.
I do agree that the cigar smoking needs to stop, but otherwise,
atmosphere is okay. Lots of plush seating in front and back, wait
staff friendly and quite knowledgeable about all their beers.
Gets painfully crowded after 5:00 weekdays, but afternoons and
weekends can't be beat. Sure, it can be like an Upper West Side
crowd in suits, but the sheer breadth of choice here makes it
worth visiting regularly. - D.W.
This has to be one of my favorite watering holes in the city. The
only downside of the place is the huge mass of yuppies that mob
the place after work on weekdays and weekend nights. However, I
can't think of a better place to kick back and sip a pint of some
of the finest bitters on a Sunday afternoon with the Times. -

Partners with Mos Caribbean (east side), Down the Hatch

downstairs bar with fireplace available for private parties. Bar
food available with waitress service. Has an upstairs lounge area

Pool table, good beer, guys in flannels and baseball caps, people
hooking up in corners, fun. - N.E.
Large fun bar with great bartenders. Happy hour 4-7 M-F, wing
& beer specials on weekends. Good prices for drink and food.
Sunday's during football season are top notch with 9 TV's and
satellite. Crowd ranges from mid 20's up. Outdoor seating during
summer and great place for people watching. - J.R.
Not bad - but a pretty young crowd. About 4:1 guys to girls. Nice
size TV's to watch the games, though (St. John's the night we
were there). - I.A.
This is a realy fun place to go with the guys, shoot some pool,
eat some wings, and watch the game on TV. If you are going to
meet some broads, this 'aint the place for you. The place is a
sausage fest. - J.R.
A laid back atmosphere to
relax and hang out, and maybe watch a game or play pool. Drink on
the cheap Wednesdays till 8. Bartenders and waitresses are nice
people who tend well to their customers. J.S.
English pub/sports bar with numerous TV screens, video games,
pool table, fooseball. Happy hour daily 4 - 7pm. Everything is
wooden. Seating in rear - decent food. 1970's music being played
on the jukebox by a twentysomething crowd - go figure. Friendly
and efficient bartenders. Outdoor seating in warms weather. There
is a private party room in the basement. Reasonable prices ($4
for a bottle of Coors Light). Bathrooms in the basement are
adequate. - T.K.
A great place to hang out with the guys. Weekends are a good
place to pick up women. C.R.
Good atmosphere with very friendly staff, and reasonable beer prices. And should you get caught short across the road at Bourbon St, the throne here is a life-saver! -
D.N.
I was there for Sunday Football and this place was amazing. Every NFL game was showing at least on one TV. They have two BIG screens usually showing a NY team. I hear there is a following here
of Patriot fans, Redskins fans, Steelers fans, Packers fans, really cool. Pints
of Bud or Coors are cheap. Wings are great, mild or spicy. Bartenders are fun, a
male (Jet fan) and female (she was a Colts fan). Manager on duty was very friendly. He was walking around making sure everyone was having a great time. I'm going back to watch football. - R.R.

Brazilian themed Greenwich Village bar next door to Nell's
nightclub that takes you to South America. Long narrow bar up
front, but if you head to the back, you'll find a pool table and
another bar. Beautiful bartenders, all from Brazil or other parts
of South America will serve up exotic concoctions. The bartenders
have bank teller-like name plates above their cash registers and
the plates of previous bartenders remain, forming a hall of fame.
Home-made interior looks like it was done by amateur (or drunken)
carpenters. There is not a right angle in the place. - S.M.
Cool place with stunning bartenders ranging in age from early 20s to early 40s. Some of the bartenders speak barely any English, so some Spanish or a simple drink order is necessary. Mostly Latin and African American crowd, but totally welcoming. Love the napkins twisted around the beer bottle necks - must be a South
American thing. - H.T.

I dropped into the Gren Brew one summer day and it has been down

knowledgeable with their micro brews as well as the food. And
they are all very friendly, be you a regular or a native New
Yorker stopping in for a pint, or a thirsty and hungry bunch of
tourists. I have recommended this spot to many of my friends and
co-workers and they have all loved it. The bar/restaurant is
charming and has a real homey feeling to it, whether you sit at
one of the comfortable stools at the bar or at one of the tables,
there is not a bad seat. I love the high ceilings and the huge
windows. The bartenders and all the staff are great, always fast

happy hour (and buffet) daily. It features a bar, a dining area,
high-top bar tables, piped-in low-key music, and a low ceiling
(smoky). It seems to draw a mixed (all ages) after-work
clientele. The prices are reasonable ($3 for a pint of Coors
Light). The bartenders are friendly and efficient. The bathrooms
are adequate. T.K.

Comments - While in Manhattan on business from San Diego, I stumbled upon this great bar. Ivan is not only a keen bartender but a great ambassador to NYC by way of West Belfast. Also my compliments to staff members Elaine and Sue-Anne for their hospitality and fantastic service. - P.C.
Being in NYC two nights and spending both evenings at this bar ought to say something. From the other tourists to the staff everyone was so nice and tons of fun. Seamus was an incredibly attentive bartender. No one waited for their drinks and he still had time to chat with the customers. The bar has tons of charm and the food was great! -

I spent quite a few hours in here over the course of the days surrounding New Year 2003 and was
pleasantly surprised for a guy whose previous experiences of NYC drinking were in Midtown and the Meatpacking District. I was pleasantly surprised by the warm atmosphere, attentive staff and friendly punters. In fact, I can safely say it'll be the first bar I visit when I return later this year.

Once again, this area has spawned another nice Irish pub. It is a small bar with lots of cocktail tables. The clientele seems to be a fun crowd. It features exposed brick walls, a low ceiling, and a few large screen TVs. The service is friendly

An amazing view w/great food, bar and staff. Seriously can't beat

of many "theme" restaurants to open around 57th

better late night, after the diners have moved on, and the lines
of tourists and teens have died down. The decor was the original
Rock n Roll museum, before they built the one in Cleveland. Bar
shaped like a guitar is a signature. Of course, there are now
Hard Rock Cafe's all over the world, so this place is no big deal
anymore. - S.M.

only biker bar where a biker would feel out of place. This is yet
another "theme" restaurant and bar, this one dedicated
to the hogs. It's OK for tourists, and biker wannabes, but come
on, do you really want to drink in a giant Harley commercial? If
so, go for it! Live to ride, ride to live...and buy the T-shirt.
- S.M.
This is another one of the theme restaurants that have become so
prevalent in the city. It has a main floor and a basement. The
ground floor has a bar and a cafeteria style dining area. There
is much biker decor on the walls and even some hogs in the area.
The bar has a metallic top and very uncomfortable bike seats as
stools. There are several TVs, a jukebox, and video games. There
is also a 'retail store' which sells t-shirts, etc. There is a
happy hour Monday thru Friday from 4 to 7PM with $2.50 draft
beers and house wines. There are also free hors d'oeuvres. The
service is good. The basement area has a stage for live acts and
lots of seating to watch it. It has more biker decor and hogs
with pictures of celebrities on bikes adorning the walls. There
is even a 'hall of fame' of celebrity bikers. There is also a
bar, several TVs, and a jukebox down there. The bathrooms (with
attendants) are located in the basement. It draws the usual mix
of local office workers and tourists as clientele (not what you'd
imagine in a 'biker' bar). -T.K.

Comments - It
functions as one of the many Penn Station commuter bars and
Madison Square Garden pre and post events bars. It gets very
crowded on certain game nights. Recently refurbished, it features
a good jukebox, several TVs, a dark oak wood bar with partitions,
a high ceiling, partially exposed brick walls, and a separate
dining room. It has friendly and efficient Irish bartenders. It's
also a pretty good restaurant. The prices are somewhat reasonable
($4.50 for a bottle of Coors Light). The bathrooms are more than
adequate but located in the basement. - T.K.
Clean cut and equally efficient Irish
bartenders pour the perfect Black & Tans at this slightly
above average mug & grub. What's better than a cold pint
served with a liquid brogue? Warmth permeates by way of mahogany,
brass, and brick, even-though the A/C is set at "meat
locker." Ample choices in a jukebox set at the perfect level
to both hear the music you want, and the conversation you're in.
An oasis, if you're in that part of town late weeknights, as any
others have closed up after the peak fares have dropped on NJ Transit/PATH, and the
denizens of the Port Authority lurk for
your spare change and smokes. - J.S.A.
I hit it perfectly! 12:00 noon to meet some
old school chums from years ago and we needed room. Well, this
place is next to Penn Station and the circus was in town at MSG
down the street, so no rug rats we're there with their parents.
Nor we're any other people. This huge gothic looking place was
all ours for the whole afternoon. And did we get service? I never
saw a concentration of Old Sod Bartenders and Barmaids waiting on
me & my friends in my life like we had here. We ate there
too. Fine food, but I really dug the long old world 100 ft. or so
bar perfectly shiny and well stocked. This place is ready for an
assault by a fleet of sailors just off the ship on leave.
Don't miss the front either. It looks like it was imported from
overseas. It's tough to compete with New York when it comes to
bar life. - E.G.

friendly, nicely done interior (comfy gas fireplace in the back
that's great on a winter night!), nice booths and stools in back,
good size bar and stools with backs in front. Can't miss the
front of the place from the street -- painted bright yellow!
Swinging doors give it a real "pubby" feel -- as well
as the friendly and knowledgeable staff! The drawn curtains in
the front window may seem a little uninviting from the street,
but don't let that discourage you. Even has Murphy's AND Guinness
on tap -- how's that for trying to please the crowd! Good
eclectic juke box that has a lot of potential. - S.T.
This is my local bar. It's a fine Irish establishment serving Guinness, Harp, & Murphy's! One might say it looks like they
moved an Irish Pub overseas brick by brick and plopped it here on
9th St. It's a relatively low key place where you might come
alone and pull up a stool next to one of the older locals and
swap pints and stories after work OR come with a group of friends
and occupy a booth with little distractions. It's very affordable as NYC prices go (3-4 dollar pints). There are also 2
TVs usually playing sports, dartboards and some of those video
trivia machines. It used to have karaoke on Saturday nights which
was out of place but still uproariously fun. The best part though
is the obnoxiously painted exterior. P.S.- If your loud and
obnoxious- stay outta my bar. - J.P.

Interesting place location in the Paine Webber Building in
Midtown. Crowd was made up primarily of mid-to late 20's and
early 30's. Decent amount of women there. Staff was very
friendly. More of a restaurant than a bar as the bar area can be
a little crowded at times. No brand label beers, just the brewery
stuff, on average cost about $5.50 per. A jukebox couldn't hurt.
- A.S.
Not bad, appetizers were tasty and so was the eye candy. Drinks
were normally priced. Fun place, but the set up needs to be

Of course one should comment on the beer.
Cornhusker is superb. I shall be visiting again from the UK in 3

For a place representing the
"Heartland," this place could use an attitude check. I
went one weekday afternoon during the holiday season, and was
told that we could not sit at a table (with the restaurant being
less than half full at an off-peak hour) because one out of the
four of us was not ordering food (we were all ordering drinks,
which are a bit pricey for medium-quality microbrewed beer). When
sent to the bar to order, we were disappointed to find out that
the only place we had found room for four to eat and drink was
"closed" for another 25 minutes, even though no one was
using the space. For a group that was ready to build a hefty tab,
we were shocked to find that our business must not have been
desired. We left and found a nice Irish pub close-by that was
happy to serve us. I hope that the tourists visiting Rockefeller
Center have better luck than we did. -J.M.
This is a popular (crowded),
well-lit brewpub located in the Rockefeller Center area. It has

There is an extensive selection of tap beers and tequilas. It
features several TVs, low music piped-in, high ceilings,
interesting art work on the walls, partially exposed brick walls,

The last hold-out from an era that once made the Yorkville

still is the king of all bars on one day a year: The day of the

packing district dive biker bar that for some reason has become
popular with yuppies and celebrities as well. Whats great
about this place is that women actually want to dance on the bar
and take off their bra (even some women who would never dream of
doing it). God bless America! - S.M.
Hey, the bar is not anything to look at, but it rocks everyday of
the week including Sundays. The barmaids are fun and hot, plus
they dance. Then they get hammered women to dance and show skin.
I love the south. - W.B.
Don't fall prey to the "buying the barmaid a shot"
scam. You dish out $4 so that they can put on an act while
they really drink H20! - B.E.
The question is how to determine which bartender is the Hog &
which is the Heifers. It is a Harley man's Heaven: if he or she
were Ray Charles or Stevie Wonder.
- SB
I'm from Dallas and being in Hogs and Heifers was like being at
some of the greatest places at home. The people were so
friendly and the service was the best! I will tell all my
friends traveling to New York to stop in for a beer and a shot! -
J.L.
Someone really has no idea of what they are talking about.
I buy shots for those bartenders all the time and I saw them pour
the same liquor into their shot glass as I had in mine. If
you watch them as they go in on the night, they are
plastered. Ever notice how one of them will disappear for
about 15 minutes or so? What could that be? Hmmmm. -
M.K.
It may the darkest, dirtiest, and it
may have the worse kinds of clientele but you will never forget
your experience there. - A.B.
Hogs & Heifers is THE dive bar of ALL dive bars. The
bartenders are sexy and have attitude. The drinks are average
price. But the kicker is the drunk chicks taking off their bras
(sometimes if you're lucky much more). - K.C.J.
This place ROCKS! The clientele is there to have a good time -
and that's just what I did. Here's a hint to the women - the
longer you keep your top on, the more drinks the male customers
will buy you. I would definitely go back there in a
heartbeat...and would be the first one dancing on the bar. -
W.S.M.
Fun place, but don't look for
a fight here! The bouncers are huge. I love the short bartender,
she is a dream come true! - D.C.
I visited Hogs after being a loyal Red Rock patron for years. I
liked it, but I found that the bartenders at Hogs really get off
on humiliation. And the crowd is touristy, as well as made up of
older, male regulars. It's a good time, for sure, but the lines
are really long, and it's pretty small, so go early and don't
wear a tie. - S.A.
Nasty dive in meat packing district, but I
had a ball there. I'm from the south, and the juke box made me
feel right at home. Bras hanging from ceiling - everyone very
friendly. I really had a good time at H & H - even brought
tee shirt home. - B.B.
If you like long lines, paying the doorman to get in, warm beer,
tourists, sailors, body odor, long waits for drinks, bouncers
with major attitude problems and fat women who like to get drunk
and "dance" on the bar- then this dump is for you! Life
is too short for this place. Oh yes, also a great place for
bridge and tunnel boys who have no other prayer of seeing a girl
take her bra off - unless they go 10 blocks north to
"Privilege" - which I would highly recommend if you
want to see some real dancers. - T.J.
Oh my gosh what a GREAT bar!!! I brought some male co-workers
with me after a company gathering. The guys seemed kind of
hesitant once they saw the outside of the bar--but once we got in
and they saw the bartenders they were fine. When the bartenders
got on the bar & started to dance I turned around to look at
the guys expressions!! Talk about a picture being worth a
thousand words!!! These guys were goo--goo for Hogs & Heifers! It was a wild night with lots of dancing & lots
of drinking. They even got me to dance on the bar. However, being
the only lady in the bunch, I did manage to keep my bra on. Hey,
after all--I do WORK with these guys!!!! Hogs & Heifers was
a HOOT!! - A.A.
A tip of my cap to H&H. This is the most patriotic bar in the
city. It raised over $60,000 for WTC relief. It is a dive bar and
damn proud of it. There are so many bras on the back of the bar
that they cover a massive shark to the point that you can't tell
how long it is. (I'm guessing 12 ft.). You want atmosphere? They
have 4-inch artillery shells on the back of the bar, car doors on
the wall, dead animals and pictures of dead animals everywhere.
Pictures of people having a hell of a good time all over the
place. And real life people having a good time every night of the
week. There is something about this place that makes losing your
inhibitions easy as pie. Second grade teachers from the sticks do
things that could get them fired if the school board ever finds
out. This is the real deal. Often imitated but never duplicated.
- P.G.
When I first walked in, I was hesitant about staying. I'm sure
glad I did. I've been to a lot of bars and this one has been one
of my favorites. I loved the bar's atmosphere and the barmaid's
sharp wit and attitude. The entertainment was a riot as well. I
really enjoyed myself and would recommend this place to any of my
friends. - K.H.
I went to this bar on Friday night, and I had an absolute blast!
The only thing pretty blah was the music. However, my friend and
I did find a way to dance to it on top of the bar. Also, I was
convinced to take my bra off. I did, however, get a tee-shirt out
of it! I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to have a
night they will never forget! - N.U.
Hogs and Heifers is the place to be if you can handle it. You
need a brass set to have fun here!!!! I loved it !!!! The
bartenders bring you to another world, they don't take crap for
anyone and that's what makes it a blast. If your a girl and can't
see yourself up on the bar...don't bother coming here. I myself
loved it and marked my place on the bar dancing to Rambling Man .
- C.J.
Coyote What? Please, it is Hogs & Heifers in that stupid
movie, and that character is Michelle from
Hogs. The movie has the identical interior of the Hogs bar,
down to the placement of the jukebox and the basement. Give me a
break. There is no other "real" place in the city other
than Hogs - everything else is just a poor imitation. - D.G.
Pissed off flat-chested bartenders threw us out after my hot wife
and her friend flashed their "mams" to the crowd while
dancing on the bar. They ought to hire some talent to work their
vs. the miserable "raisins" they've got pouring drinks.
- J.T.
The first night that we were in NYC we went to the one on 1st
Ave. Other than an old couple and a band, we were the only ones
there. It was forgettable. Then, the last night (Saturday), we
headed to the one in the meat packing district. We waited 40
minutes in line, but it was well worth it. The scene was raucous.
The bartenders were hilarious. The beer selection is somewhat
weak though, and the bartenders chased a good number of the
female patrons away by humiliating them. The ones that stayed
were up on the bar dancing though. The bartender blowing fire
during "Ring of Fire" was the highlight of the night.
Tons of fun even though it was a "sausage fest", a
decent amount of shady older men especially. Bathroom is pretty
terrible but the bouncers are cool, and the size of mountains. - M.N.P.
When I first neared the outside I was hesitant to enter but my friends insisted on going in. I entered to see women dancing on
the bar and taking their bras off. Some random guy told me I would be up there soon enough and I laughed. But twenty minutes later I was up there
shaking my stuff, not once but three times in one night. I went back St.
Patrick's Day and danced yet again. The place is a blast! But guys don't try to get on the bar. The huge bouncers will throw you right out. The bathroom line really sucks though, especially when you have broken the seal. There is only one stall. -
J.K.
What a Dump ! Barmaids can be OK, until they get the megaphone out. Too bad. It could be a great dive bar. In reality though, you should be drinking at Red Rocks West or The Village Idiot if you like this type of bar. -
W.M.
We stumbled in H&H with a busload of fellow bagpipers. After the bartenders initial barrage of abuse by megaphone, all the pantywaists hightailed it out. Four of us stayed, and piped for the rugby & biker crowd. The bartenders bought us shots of JD and traded friendly barbs with us throughout the evening.
If you're a puss, don't go here. If you can hold your own with the girls' abuse, you're in for a good night! -
D.M.
We've been going there for eons now. Great place for looking at bikes...girls are great,
too...but the newbies and the yuppies kind of get out of hand but for the bouncers.
Ride your bike up and park it out front...bikers don't have to wait.... we walk right in.... the line is for the
yuppies. The show is always great and the music is hot. Don't let the yuppies distract
you. - B.F.
A total dump, don't even think about visiting. The earlier comment about which is the Hog and which the
Heifer behind the bar sums up this waste of space. Unless you're a pre-pubescent kid with no chance of seeing a woman revealing her bra, don't waste your time coming here. - B.C.
What a skanky bar. The bartenders put on a tired act. The patrons were a mix of genuine friends of the owner to very skanky girls in
work boots. I ended up at Au Bar, where the women washed their hair. - G.S.
This bar is awesome!!! I came here with three friends after hitting The Culture
Club for my friend's bachelorette party. The "bachelorette" stood out from the rest! Wearing a veil,
tiara, etc. One thing I remember was that the bouncers were big and cool! And also there were
a lot of men. We all had a great time....and want to go back sometime this month. The bachelorette showed "her puppies!" and lost her bra! The crowd went crazy! The bartenders also had megaphones which
I thought was really cool. They were rude to some peeps but they definitely made us laugh!
Def. a rowdy crowd! I was having so much fun, I didn't want to leave. My friends swear they've seen
Jason Giambi there...she flashed him! Definitely worth going...you'll have a blast!
-J.A.
Formerly one of my favorite places to go to while in the city, and very respective of the "attitude" of the bartenders, I went there with a friend
in Sept. '02. There was a new bartender in training who was doing fine but the other, regular bartender was your classic bitch, even confrontational! I am but one person, but have been going there for many a years, even have a helmet on the wall behind the pool table! It is a shame that such a fun place has to be represented in such a way. I hope
she gets to read these reviews! Sorry, but it is the truth. - D.B.
The comment about some guy's wife being kicked out for showing her "mams"...is most likely false. I've seen my fair share of bared chests here, much to the crowds enjoyment. And another thing... you people who try to demean 'the bridge and tunnel crowd' should re-evaluate your meaningless lives and find something better to do with your time. -
J.S.
I was there for the ceremonies of 9-11 this past year 2002, having been one of the many responding rescue crews, and the only native
American crew from South Dakota that responded for 9-11. I had a blast there, and
I will return there again. After all it reminded me of a bar in interior South
Dakota called the horseshoe bar which is another run down juke box booze joint that all the local ranchers and real cowboys hang out at. Kinda a home away from home. -
S.B.
Really crappy bar. Rude bouncers. Fat old women showing their saggy mams! - D.M.
This is the worst Bar in NY! W moved to the city two years ago and heard all about it so we
went, only to find that the girls behind the bar were very rude! I tell ya, it will be a cold day in hell before
I go there again! I did discover this amazing bar though, the girls were so nice and they all really enjoy there jobs, its the Coyote Ugly Saloon, a much better place to spend money.
In fact, I asked the barmaid the question they get all the time, is the movie based on this bar?
She said YES! She showed me the article in GQ magazine written by a former coyote ugly bartender. As it turns out that was what inspired the movie to be made!
So the name of the movie is Coyote Ugly and well the bar is Coyote Ugly too. I hope that this puts the rest the comments
I read about the movie being based on Hogs & Heifers because, well clearly, that just is not true. - B.T.

Comments - This
place is a time warp. The Polish bartender is as slow as
molasses, and has a tendency to babble about the great war (one
can only conjecture if he is referring to the first or the
second). Still, there is a certain camp appeal to it all, and the
drinks are dirt cheap. - M.B.
An East Village institution. Just to set the previous review
straight, the sometimes irascible old man bartending in slippers
and B.O. is Ukrainian, not Polish. And, according to a friend's
dad who'd seen him play in his heyday, the man was once one HELL
of a soccer player.
The Atmosphere/Decor is pure dive bar. The jukebox is full of
rock chestnuts, and it fits perfectly. It's the kind of place
where you can be wasted enough to hear "Light My Fire"
and think it's pretty cool.
Service: simply, the bartender is a man of favorites. Even when I
was a semi-regular there, sometimes I just didn't make the cut.
This means that even when the bar isn't crowded you might wait a
while, smiling patiently with money in your hand and empty
glasses before you, for next round. And not because he hasn't
noticed. What are you going to do?
Bathroom: yes.
In all, the place is a great and true dive bar, and the drinks
are dirt cheap. It's like an old Converse Chuck in the closet you
haven't been able to throw out for some reason. I don't stop in
there much anymore, but I still note it with a smile when I roll
by. - S.G.
What a find whilst on holiday from the UK. It felt like being in
a movie. Well priced for Manhattan. Great old wooden decor and
stalls down the back. The round bar is cool. - H.D.
This bar knocks blocks off anywhere else I've been in NYC. Ace
low key decor and the bar tell fuckwits where to go. - T.B.
This old, small dive bar has a semi-circle bar in one room and
tables in a second room. It looks like an air raid shelter. The
clientele seems to be a bunch of old burnouts. It features a
black and white TV, a video game, Christmas lights all year
round, and a low ceiling (smoky). There is a limited beer
selection. The prices are good and
the service varies by day. The bathrooms are pitiful. - T.K.
The beers are cheap but the old guy who runs the place is usually so loaded that he will take your money then claim you didn't pay and kick you out. He also sings opera at the top of his lungs in a competition with the jukebox. In other words, it's tons of fun if you are in the right mood. The jukebox does have great tunes on it. - L.O.

Good neighborhood bar with a solid jukebox, excellent happy hour prices and $1 drinks for ladies on Saturdays. Not to mention firemen. -
S.A.
It's a great place to hang out especially if you are a big Bruce Springsteen fan.
The food is good and the beer is always cold. Plus the service is always top notch.
Also, a great meeting place before or after you go to the movies at Kips Bay. -
M.L.S.
Cool hang-out kind of place, affordable drinks, and cool karaoke on Tuesdays. I'd make it a regular hangout. -
T.M.
Ok what is up with the pictures? Is there even a theme here with the pictures? Get off the fireman ride. -
E.F.
I just thought that this bar lacked anything original, was too similar to The Salty
Dog in Bay Ridge, where the fireman actually hang out. - L.M.
Formerly called South Beach, the name of this place would lead one to believe it is a firemen's hangout. I didn't notice that. There is a small bar and several high-top tables, decent tunes on the jukebox, darts, a low ceiling with fans, and a large screen TV. The prices are somewhat expensive. The female bartender was friendly and
efficient. - T.K.

Comments - A big letdown. The
food wasn't up to par, the quality was ok, but the portions were
way too tiny. Order a side of anything and they serve it in a
thimble. I entered a hot wing-eating contest and the wings were
so mild you could feed them to infants. They should have called
it a wussy wing eating contest. And there are much better sports
bars in town (Scruffy Duffy, Time Out etc). They have no jukebox,
so you are stuck listening to the house mix. And finally I wasn't
very impressed by the staff who cater to big groups and blow off
singles and couples. Not a very friendly place. - J.P.
Great bar if you have a 8-year-old son that you're training to go
to shaker bars someday. I saw a bachelor party at this bar which
just cracked me up. Either go to Scores or go to a real bar. -
P.O.
I went there when I was 17 and was annoyed that the
"famous" waitresses were nothing but ugly girls with
big knockers. - R.J.
I went a few times and stopped going. Now I only go there for the
calendar signings. The out of town girls there for the signings
are much more friendly then the in-house staff. - P.G.
Obviously, speaking from a man's perspective, it's great. Wooden
everything (walls, tables, chairs, plates). Having paper towels
on rollers (wooden, of course) is an extra nice touch. Reasonable
prices ($4 for a bottle of Coors Light). Good food. The
attractively attired waitresses are polite and efficient. Well
lit, many TV screens for sports viewing, piped in 60's music.
T-shirts, sweatshirts, etc. for sale. Bathrooms are adequate. If
anyone is offended by this place (sees it as sexist), lighten up.
- T.K.
I have frequented Hooters' in the northeast for the past few
years and I must say this was one of the more enjoyable
experiences. The service was awfully quick as well as extremely
kind. Obviously the atmosphere is stereotyped towards men, but it
is a place where all can enjoy a good meal (women have to be open
minded though). The food was great and I plan on visiting again
soon. - D.S.

729 Seventh Ave. (49th St.) | 3.5 | 3.5 | 4 | 5.5 |
Comments - The
Riese Corporation seems to have gotten it right this time with
this coupling of its Irish pub and Mexican bar/restaurant at this
Theater District location. Houlihan's occupies the second floor.
It has a rather spacious bar and dining room. There is a TV set
but no music. The decor is that of a typical New York Irish pub.
The beer selection is limited. The service is pretty good. The
prices are somewhat reasonable ($5 for a bottle of Miller Lite).
The bathrooms are decent. Tequilaville occupies the ground floor
and basement. The ground floor has a bar and some seating. The
basement has a larger dining and the bathrooms (adequate) are
located here. There is a TV and piped-in music. The decor is NYC
Mexican. It also has a limited beer selection. The service is
also pretty good. The prices are also somewhat reasonable. ($4.75
for a bottle of Miller Lite) - T.K.
This may be the lamest bar in NYC besides the Applebee's on 42nd
street. Seems like some shill from the Riese Corporation is
submitting bar reviews to this sight. - P.O.

Under new ownership, Hunky Dory's is a decent
place to catch a game or play one if you are a dart or pool
shooter. It has a cozy interior and the crowd is
"interesting". The bar closes early some nights which I
think is a bad move and is an easy way to lose late and early
patronage. Marybell, one of the two sibling owners is very nice,
very attractive and is quick to engage you in conversation. The
bar is not huge but is adequate and promotes interaction amongst
the patrons. The decor could use some work. The jukebox was OK.
Service could be better but is not horrible. The two bartenders I
have dealt with were very different. One was very young and green
but friendly the other was a bit older with more experience but
had a real attitude problem. Here's to hoping better for them in
the future. Cheers!!! - T.S.

Comments - The
legendary Rockefeller Center saloon where Don Imus always got
blotto has relocated to this site in the theater district. While
much is the same, much has also changed. There are no more dining
tables in the middle of the bar area. (That was always awkward).
The decor is the same down to the tiled bathrooms in the cellar.
There is now a unisex bathroom on the main floor. (be sure to
lock the door). They now play music (fortunately, they don't
blast it). Bartenders Shane and James are great. The clientele
(after-work, tourists and theatergoers) has changed a little (a
somewhat older crowd, but younger than at the old location).
Prices are a little higher ($5 for a bottle of Amstel Light). It
is still well lit. There are dining tables in the back and
upstairs. Since it is not on a corner, the view is not as good.
The ownership is now partnered with the Playwright Taverns. - T.K.
