This is a very classy Scottish/Irish pub restaurant. Kilts and
Scottish decor-Scottish/Irish bartenders with sharp wit and good
sense of humor. Excellent collection of single malt whiskeys.
Excellent haggis for lunch served with Drambuie! Makes you feel
very much at home - not like some places who try to make you feel
at home and wish to hell you were there! - J.M.
Excellent bar with a great atmosphere and originality. Love the
fact that the bartenders wear kilts and wear them with pride -
loads of character. Better than average beer lists and one of the
best single malt lists I have ever seen. Definitely a bar worth
going out of your way for. - C.L.
Discovered this Scottish bar/restaurant by accident on Tartan Day. We've come back
several times since. They serve real pints at decent prices for the location, great fries, and for the most part friendly & professional
wait staff & bartenders. Gets crowded post-work/pre-theater but otherwise comfortable and a much needed escape from the trendy hell most Manhattan bars have become. There's also a semi-upscale restaurant in the back that serves
prix-fixe pre-theater dinner. For sports fans, there are enough TVs to watch the game w/out it being intrusive to those not watching. -
Y.P.
Scottish
cousin of Maggie's Place. Long bar. Extensive beer selection.
Scottish pictures on walls. Sometimes the bartenders (of both
genders) wear kilts. Reasonable prices. Bathrooms located in the basement are
OK. It gets very crowded on Friday nights. All ages, mostly
after-work patrons. - T.K.

St. James is the new bar on the block in the Kew
Gardens/Forest Hills area. The bar is good looking and they seem
to be ready to have live entertainment Thursday thru Saturday. If
you are not familiar with the area, it is populated by a lot of
flight attendants. Good looking friendly flight attendants from
all over. Thursdays are very good and the women who work there
are incredible. It is also a nice change from the over-done Irish
bars of Queens. I love 'em, but variety is nice, too. Misty is
good with her unique shots. Check them out: One of my new
favorites. -T.S.J.

I believe the author of the posted review
is mistaking the St. Mark's Ale House for another. While some
patrons are college-age, most are not. The style of the bar is German (think Hofbrau
house)-not English. There are about 15 large, low tables, great
for accommodating groups. The pints range from $4-$6 and there are
24 beers on tap. This is just a sports bar
with decent burgers and a friendly staff. - N.P.

Comments - Sala, that's Spanish for "The Hall" is a classy, unpretentious, and fun wine bar and restaurant. The decor is similar to a classic Madrid hangout, with brick walls, archways, a bar with comfortable stools, a beady lounge downstairs and a reasonable selection of over 30 wines by the glass and by the bottle. The service is respectable and the choice of wines is varied. (My lady friend and I tried a Brut, an
Alvarinho, and a 20 year Reserve Port, with the port being the highlight of the evening.) The bar in the downstairs lounge is much more fun, with the dim lights although there could be more comfortable sofas. We hear DJ's spin Weds-Suns, but we were just fine with our music mix on a Tuesday night. Perfect for a first date. -

Great
drinking joint. Large tap and bottle beer selection. Friendly
bartenders and great pub food. Dart boards, pool table and a kick

A lot of fun. Great place to
drink. Excellent bartenders and regulars with plenty of TVs, pool
and darts. Good beer selection and the wings aren't bad either. -

I had a great time at the Scruffy Duffy! I like the fact that you
sign up to play pool there isn't this 'guess who's quarters
those are' crap. The women are here, guys. Music staff and
location makes this place a favorite. - C.S.
Don't be fooled by the name nor the outside appearance. It's a
lot more spacious inside than the outside appearance would lead
one to believe. It's a pretty good place to view sports events.
It gets very crowded on Friday nights (an interesting mixture of
twentysomething patrons). It features several TV sets, a jukebox,
a pool table up front and a dart board in the rear. The bathrooms
are OK, the prices are reasonable, the service is decent and the beer selection is
extensive. - T.K.
Nice big place to come for a drink in midtown. Great munchies!
One down side: The pool table is right at the front door, so when
a big crowd walks in, it becomes impossible to shoot. - R.P.
My fiancé and I went to Scruffy's for the first time on Christmas
Eve and we had a great time the people were a lot of fun and so
was the manager. I would recommend it to anyone. - B.A.
Me and a group of about twenty went there for my birthday. Had a
great time. - M.K.
Cool bar. Great to hang out for a game. Has a pool table up
front... a few dart boards in the back (not on Friday and
Saturday nights). The bartenders are friendly (including the
owner). Mixed atmosphere, has good music and for the most part,
nice clientele. Bathrooms are small but clean. - S.S.
It was the first bar I visited after arriving from England and probably the best. The girls were hot, the beer was plentiful
and the tunes were rocking. Plus, on Saturday night they showed
the scores and highlights from the English soccer leagues. Every
time I'm in the city its my first port of call. - P.J.R.
Damn good place to hang out with friends. Had a good amount of
regulars, but being a first timer was a great experience as well.
The owner didn't even mind us playing quarters at a back table. -
K.R.
Can't really find fault with this midtown west bar. TV's are all
over the place making watching the game easy. Staff is friendly
and drinks are affordable. Only problem is the place can get a
bit crowded. - A.S.
This is one great sports bar. I stopped in
last Sunday and they had at least six different games going on at
the same time. The wings were really good. Extra meaty. Being a
JD drinker I can't comment on the beer other than they had a good
selection. I also got the impression they get a big Packer crowd.
Cheese heads on the wall. Bret Favre jerseys. And the crowd was
way on the side of the Pack to beat the Vikes that afternoon. -
P.G.
Scruffy's was our "local" whilst
on holiday from England. After a hard day's sight-seeing it is a
welcoming place. The clientele are knowledgeable about sport and
it is always good to meet Manchester United fans in exotic
locations - even working behind bars. Didn't try the Boddie's -
it's brewed only 5 miles down the road from here, but the local
beers are well worth sampling. Cheers. - P.K.
I kind of just landed in this bar, but after my first experience
there, I would recommend to everyone to try it out at least once.
Mostly full of regulars, but all are friendly (including
bartenders and manager!), and everyone is looking to have a good
time, no drama! - S.L.A.
Great place that we ended up visiting 3 times in our 1 week in
the city. Excellent beers on tap at good prices (Guinness for
$5). The hot wings are awesome and the bartender remembered us
and gave us a pint on him since we tipped well. The inside of the
bar was really nice, better than you'd think from looking at the
outside. - M.N.P.
If you want to feel at home and see a lot of friendly faces and enjoy top personal
service - then this is definitely the place to go. Scruffy's might be in midtown but for a great, easy night out, it's the best! The drinks are great too! - J.D.
Friendly bartenders at any time of day. So if you find yourself in need of a beer mid-afternoon, after work, or later at night, pay a visit to Scruffy's. The bar food is decent, the beer is served in "real" pint glasses, and with all the TV screens, you can be sure to catch any sporting game you desire. - B.C.
If you want to meet some real New Yorkers come to this bar. I visited it every night I was in NY and will
definitely visit again this summer. The staff was friendly and it was a fun experience. They treated southerners like family. It made me want to stay in NY a week longer. -
D.M.
Only ever visited Scruffy's during the day, but on each occasion there's been a good crowd. Staff were always friendly, and service was excellent. Beers were reasonably priced, and the bartender told us about some offers they had to make our rounds cheaper. Can't fault that! - D.N.

Interesting little place on Avenue A. Kind of a lounge feel to
it. Some velvet couches and tables at the sides of the bar and in

A ridiculous place with an even more ridiculous clientele. Half
of the male inhabitants were clad in black plastic pants and club
shirts (translation: straight out of Jersey) and the girls wore
tube tops in sub-freezing weather. Amusing if only you're in the
mood to poke fun at boys who are trying too hard and girls who
clearly lack full-length mirrors and a gym membership. The two
levels are cool, but the decor on either is not. Stay away; there
are better places to be had in the neighborhood. Try La Linea if

It took me three trips to eventually find this damn
place. Large, sparse rooms and red lights give the initial
impression that the old Siberia is back. However, the longer you
are there, the more you realize that the charm of the original
place is just plain gone. Same slumming yuppies and gay rules
about swearing, but the grit is gone. Especially not worth the
risk of life and limb walking down W. 40th at 3 in the morning.
If you were an original Siberiaphile, you might want to just tie
this one to a tree, bash it with a shovel, bury it in the back
yard, tell the kids it ran away and find yourself a new dive bar.
- A.S.
Borrrring! At the door, a friend and I were told by the timid ID check guy that there would be 'No hitting here.' We asked him to repeat himself, wondering what the hell he was talking about; when he explained that there was zero tolerance on hitting on women in Siberia. Which can only be at the order of the owner, who
once reprimanded me for letting loose a colorful expletive during a low-key, private conversation back when the bar was in the 50th
St. station. He bought drinks for myself and a few friends (we have a mutual friend) and offered up 'To alcoholism!' as a toast. Usually, I'm thankful of a knock, but what a knob!
Since finding out that he owns Bellevue, I've stopped going there too. The guy hires hotties to work behind the bar, but won't let you speak to them? Puhleeze. Not even for free booze.

The bartenders are hip East Village babes. The real
attraction is the music scene. No cover and some of the best
punk/folk/pop songwriters around. - N.R.
Great East Village neighborhood spot, with a 24 hour diner on the corner,
attached to a bar, pool table downstairs and a performance space, "The
Fort" in the back. The Fort is the de facto headquarters of the
Anti-folk scene. Several live acts per night. Admission is free, but there
is a two drink minimum, and patrons are encouraged to tip the artists.
Come on, give 'em a buck or two! - S.M.

My friends and I just happened to stumble on this bar. It's so much fun. If you like hip hop/reggae/house music then you're all set. It's
loungy, dark, with sofas but people dance. Upstairs (Leopard Lounge) more of house/techno. Bartenders are great! The bathroom stinks only because there's one toilet, while the gents get one toilet and a urinal. Also, there's no cover to get in, $2 coat check (great in the winter, so you don't have to freeze your
tush off). -
P.G.
I love this place, it's so much fun! My friends and I happen to stumble upon it. It's free cover. There's a $2 coat check. Upstairs is the Leopard Lounge but the first floor is Sin Sin. It's kind of small but there's always room to dance. Saturday's it gets super packed. Friday are cooler! Less crowded. There is a lot of diversity/mixed crowd. Play mostly hip hop and reggae. The bartenders are super cool too. Kevin is GREAT! Tip him well and he'll take care of you. Couches and tables around, long bar with stools. The bathroom sucks if you're a girl, it's one at a time. It's pretty big too which they could probably have built 2 stalls. Guys bathroom has a stall and urinal, figures! Overall this place is so much fun. There's always a story to tell. Definitely try it out. I'll be back on Friday. - C.R.
This place is a joke. I had more fun at Black Star Bar just across the street. I had to wait 20 minutes for a Corona because the bartender was talking to some girl and just ignored me. - L.A.
Sin Sin
is on the ground floor and the Leopard Lounge is on the second
floor. Despite different names, you can go back and forth from
one to another. They are both dark and lounge-like, both play the
music loud and neither has a TV, and both draw a typical East
Village clientele. The prices are reasonable. The beer selection is somewhat limited and the
service is good. The bathrooms are OK. - T.K.

Comments - It's a great idea to have a "hidden" bar in this part of midtown, and once you find it, you'll come back again and again for the great selection of wines and beers that are primarily from small breweries (they don't serve liquor. The bar is tiny but has a great vibe and the decor is like a mod apartment mixed with a dark secret cave. I wish I had the bathroom fixtures in my own apartment. SRO is a great place to chill with a small group of friends. -

Comments - This cool uptown bar gives a unique vibe different from the rest of the run-of-the mill college friendly bars. A block up from the legendary SoHa Bar, in the midst of pubs, bars and other generic lounges, Sip spins house, electro-clash, lounge,
Bossa Nova, electronica and other deep beats. The drinks are nice and strong, the bartenders are friendly, the tapas menu is generous. The space is small yet you can't beat the downtown vibe without the downtown attitude. -

Formerly the Penn Bar & Grill, there is a bar area
on the ground floor and a dining room on the second floor. It
functions as one of the many Penn Station commuter bars and
Madison Square Garden pre & post event bars. As the name
would suggest, there are several TVs for sports viewing both
upstairs and downstairs. The bar and high-top bar tables on the
ground floor give the diner-esque look. The decor downstairs is
sports pictures on the the walls and upstairs it's pictures of
old New York. They seem to be making an effort to keep out the
sleazy people of the area. I was there on a slow night. I don't
know well it could handle a large crowd on a 'game night'. The
beer selection is somewhat limited. The prices are a little high. The service is friendly and efficient. The
unisex bathroom on the ground floor is one-at-a-time. The
bathrooms upstairs are adequate. - T.K.

Part of the ghoulish trio along with the 2 Jekyll & Hyde's, all
owned by Eerie Entertainment, Inc. Tiny, tiny bar area, so this
place is more suited for sitting at tables and sampling from the
large international beer selection that Eerie is known for. Named
after the bar from the film An American Werewolf In London.

Nearly the worst bar in New York, lame atmosphere, lame crowd,
it's saved by the cheapest shots in town. Use it as a
jumping off point for the rest of your evening by throwing back a
few shots of whiskey, but never spend more than 20 minutes here.
- S.H.
It's a SMALL English pub interestingly decorated (a Union Jack
hangs over the bar). There is also a haunted house theme to this
place. It draws a good-looking twentysomething clientele. It has
an extensive beer selection. It's a little expensive for the
area. The bathrooms are one-at-a-time. - T.K.

Where do I begin? The bartenders in this place are not the nicest folks I've dealt with. Correction: they are nice to pretty girls (but as the last poster pointed out, there are not many pretty girls frequenting this place).
Imagine being asked to leave a dive bar because your shirt is ripped. I ripped it because it snagged on something on the wall, and it
wasn't even ripped badly, but the guy insisted I leave! The nerve! Stay far away from this place. With all the options in NYC,
don't make the same mistake I did. PS: the music stinks. - D.R.P.

good happy hour specials. An "old man's bar" that draws
tourists and theatergoers late in the evening. Well lit, it
features several TVs, a jukebox, video games, a low ceiling with
fans, and cafeteria style dining. It may remind you of a Blarney
Stone. The prices are reasonable and the service is good. The

It gave me the feeling of being with a good
mix of real people. You wont meet any one named Biff or Jeremy.
More like Mac or Red. One of the true vintage bars left in the
city. True grit atmosphere and still very friendly. - P.E.
A vestige of the old, seedy, glorious Times
Square. Barmen are quick with a buyback if you're OK, quick with
the hurling stick if you mouth off. The corned beef is excellent.
- T.D.
A great place to relax and have a beer, or a drink. Smith's bar
is not the NYC bar you would expect. It isn't crowded and the
bartenders are very good and very friendly. Simply a great bar
one of the best. A great place to be with a few good friends,
this bar has that 'Cheers' feel to it. - N.W.
The last real NYC bar in Times Square. My Grandpa must have drank here. The best
bartenders in NYC, in my humble opinion. Not much to look at from the outside, but inside your the long lost cousin coming back home. Food is the best deal around. You never know who is sitting beside you. Nothing
phony about this place. I'd bring my mother as well as my lover to this place. - U.U.

This small, three-level bar/lounge looks like it was originally something other than a bar.
I was there on a Thursday night and it was not very crowded. It features numerous TVs, a loud sound system, brick walls, video games, and a pool table. The prices are reasonable and the female bartenders are friendly and efficient. The bathrooms are more than adequate. The place is fairly new and it may need some time to develop a character. -

Neighborhood bar attracts a young, upper east-side crowd. Large
glass windows that open in nice weather. Tile floors,
mahogany bar. Draft beers and single malt scotches.
Dart, pool table. Juke box. Huge crowds on Friday

about. Nothing attracts a crowd like a crowd, I
guess. Opened in 1996 in the former Pirates NY. - S.M.

The best place to go for a drink when in the Columbia University
area. Prices are reasonable, especially during the happy
hour. The crowd, while always representing some Columbia
students, draws a large number of locals. If you like the
lighting dark and the couches plush, this is an excellent spot to
hang out. The name, lamely enough, stands for "South
of Harlem." - J.S.L.
Spacious, but often filled with roaming
hands! Good place to go with a group, but be prepared to fend off
the sleaze bags. And there are usually many Columbia girls
looking to entertain on the bar. - H.A.S.
Very friendly atmosphere! - C.D.
There is definitely a cool vibe going on in this place. Its really dark though, but with a lot of beautiful women dancing on the bar and madness going on everywhere -- I guess
there's a reason why its so dark in here. The drinks are quite cheap, they are also incredibly strong....what sums this place up the most is what a colleague of mine once said -- its apparently a famous saying at Columbia University -- "people go to Columbia to get and education --they go to SoHa to get laid!" - J.D.

This new trendy Cuban on W. 14th St. is crowded
with reason. While it has a full menu, this is not just a place
for dinner. A great date spot, there are two large bars where you
can order specialties like an excellent mojito, and some tasty
tapas as well. Def worth checking out if you're in the
neighborhood, but beware spotty service. - S.A.
Looks like you stepped into a movie set
