If you're not interested in the music, don't bother. The service

Comments - A bunch of buddies and I went to Cafe 31st before and after the Big East Semis last March. The service was very good (fast), and it was affordable. It was a good atmosphere, filled with college basketball junkies and others just looking for a good time. Not only was the atmosphere good that day, it was also very easy to watch the other tournament games, the place is filled with
TVs. I would say the only downside to the place would be their bathrooms, but I have seen worse. I would recommend going there if your looking to have a good time with some friends in a sports
environment. My friends and I will definitely be back there in a few days for the '03 Big East Semis! -

This is
a sports bar across the street from Madison Square Garden. The
prices are reasonable. It serves as one of the many Penn Station
commuter bars and Madison Square Garden pre & post events
bars. - T.K.
Bar located right across MSG. Gets very crowded before Rangers
and Knicks games. Lots of TV's located throughout the
bar/restaurant. Attracts a clientele of all shapes and sizes.
Staff is attractive but dresses like trash. Prices are
affordable, but the food isn't world-class. - A.S.

This bar/lounge seems to attract a somewhat older clientele. I'm told that it has been around since the 1960s. It is a rather spacious place with a long bar and numerous tables along the exposes brick wall. There is a high ceiling and a yard for the warmer weather. The beer selection is somewhat limited. The service is decent. The bathrooms, located in the basement, are adequate. -

- Went
with a group of 20 people. . .all had a terrible time. We kept
getting yelled by the bouncers and waitresses b/c we were not
standing where we should be. We would move to a different part of
the bar and get yelled at again. So we left, all 20 of us. - J.E.
Great happy hour crowd. Attentive bartenders, attractive
patrons (especially the women), great DJ, good service.
Often crowded but in a good way. The food is excellent. -
J.B.
Great food, great bar, great beer, great women and great workers.
Top Mexican Bar in my book!!!!! - J.P.
The fun kind of crowded. It is
where good looking groups gather. In fact, I met a hot guy there.
Joe from NJ if you see this...I do want to see you naked!!! -
A.R.W.
The happy hours at Calico Jacks on Wednesday and Thursday nights
are fabulous. Great after work crowd with plenty of chicas for
the men and chicos for the women. Excellent DJ, excellent
cocktails, excellent drink specials. One of the better happy
hours in Manhattan for the young fun ones. Dont be scared away by
the crowd - I will definitely be going back. - C.B.
I loved this place, the music was fun, the bartenders where
great, and lots of men! It does get really crowded, but it is so
much fun. - J.T.
The restructuring of the "Irish Times Square" has taken
place. The old "Maguire's Cafe" has successfully gone
from an Irish pub/sports bar to a Mexican cantina. It is still
connected to McFadden's (f.k.a. Ryan-McFadden's) with the common
kitchen and joint ownership. The after-work clientele is pretty good, but I still
miss Maguire's. The Mexican motif is really done up here. The place
features several TV's, a jukebox/Karaoke, a high ceiling,
cocktail/dining tables, and a Mexican menu. It's not quite the
sports bar that Maguire's was (McFadden's is now more of a sports
bar). Ryan McFadden's always drew a slightly younger crowd than
Maguire's - that's now reversed. The prices are reasonable. The service is friendly and
efficient. It can be a little difficult when it's very crowded.
The bathrooms are more than adequate. - T.K.
Hottest women in mid-town. Good food, cold beer, good looking
chics and good music. What else is there to say? - J.L.S.
Too many
Long Island snobs who think their sh*ts don't stink. Give me a
break. But it's a cool place run by Irish, even though you think
it's Mexican. - M.J.
Mexican Bar located next to McFadden's on 42nd & 2nd draws a mid 20's crowd. There's not much space by the bar, so it is usually crowded (there's a separate seating area). They have a variety of affordable specials. The sandiness of the bar countertop is a nice touch. There are several TV's located around the bar for sports viewing. - A.S.

This is easily the worst bar in the city, if not the
United States. The margaritas come in thimbles, and as for the
food, imagine if Boston Market made quesadillas. The capper:

the B & T and go! - N.B.
Faux-Mexican fare, real Mexican staff. The $14 margaritas last a really long time. It helps if you speak
Spanish when ordering at the bar. $12 shots of Patron, quite expensive. - D.

This place is very different - a must see. Exclusive looking, it
resembles something from a 1930's movie. Very high ceiling, bar, living room chairs, coffee tables, a balcony with cocktail
tables. Well lit, no music, good service, hostess, coat check. A
rather elegant crowd, I was clearly out of my league. Very expensive drinks. Unisex bathrooms are
one-at-a-time. - T.K.

A hip, attractive crowd, a hopping bar scene, and an

Probably one of the largest nightclubs in the area, this
is several places in one. There is a long bar area with
dining/cocktail tables and booths, a large stage area for top
musical acts and a spacious dance floor, a game room, and an
outdoor yard with a bar and food. There are 'side shows' in areas
other than the main stage. There are many TVs for sports viewing.
The clientele is as different as the musical acts for a given
night (the acts run the gamut from rock to big band). The prices
also vary (watch for drink specials). There are cover charges
most nights which vary with the popularity of the musical acts.
The parking lot is spacious. It was known for years as the OBI
East (Oak Beach Inn). Cabs are usually easy to access. The
bathrooms are adequate. - T.K.

Southwestern restaurant where good looking upper east-siders
hang-out and/or dine. The bar is an excellent people watching
spot, since crowds for the popular restaurant keeps a steady
stream of new faces at the bar. Since its predominantly a
restaurant, it closes earlier than the average bar, and is
governed by the NY no-smoking laws, even if your just hanging out
at the bar. - S.M.

The most comfortable "neighborhood" bar on the East Side. A long, narrow, extremely well-stocked bar, with just
enough Irish flavor to please the
pub-hopper in all of us. The staff and service are what make this bar a winner,
as you'll always be treated like family, whether you're a regular or a first-timer.
The music is loud, the drinks flow readily, the food is tasty, and the people are fun. If

Casa La Femme is a sexy restaurant and bar, great for
smooching with your date or with one of the beautiful guys you
meet there (or girls if you're a guy). A very impressive place to
take someone. A little on the expensive side (7-9$ per drink),
but it is extremely classy and whoever you take there will
definitely be impressed. Some perks are belly dancers, beautiful
Egyptian theme, nice bathrooms, beautiful people, silk tents if
you're having dinner there and great drinks (I recommend the
French Kiss). Very classy and trendy place. - O.F.
We celebrated an important birthday with over 20 people at Casa (sit-down dinner). I had two experiences that I will never forget. First, as our dinner progressed, another dinner party--which began as a
sit-down dinner--turned into a large, raucous affair. People at that party were standing at our table, kicking our chairs and bumping into many. When I asked the offenders politely to please cease from disrupting our dinner, I received a vulgar retort. Realizing that I needed the
speak with the manager, I approached a woman who seemed to be in charge. I asked her if she was the manager and she said no. When I asked who the manager was, she responded: `You'll find the manager downstairs`. As instructed, I went `downstairs` but only found the restrooms. When I came back upstairs, the same woman was laughing and running towards the kitchen. I asked a busboy to please point out the manager, and to my surprise, the manager was THAT SAME WOMAN! I
approached the seating host with my complaint (and also mentioned what had happened with the manager) and he apologetically told me that HE was the manager and that he would make sure to reprimand the mystery
woman/manager, as well as make sure that the party causing the disturbance would be admonished. Well this of course never happened, and after speaking with our waiter, I found out that the host was actually NOT the manager. To say that the actions of the manager and host are unprofessional is an understatement. Childish and ignorant are more like it. Another
unbelievable occurrence relates to a couple who was seated in one of the `romantic`
translucent tents, clearly performing oral sex on each and moaning quite loudly. The entire restaurant (including the manager who seemed to be enjoying the show more than most) was aware of what was happening...but nothing was done to curtail this probably illegal (and at worst
unhygienic) public display. What a night... - G.G.

CBGB's is a phenomenon. I've been going to
shows there for over ten years. There have been too many legends that have
graced that stage and I'm sure there are plenty in the making. Flyers and
stickers from eons ago wallpaper the walls. The bar staff, although always
boggled by drunken punk rockers, are quick and efficient. If you can hold it,
I'd advise NOT going to the bathrooms because you'll never know what's flowing
out of those things. Unfortunately, Hilly's and CB's time is limited. NYU has
decided to rip down this historical landmark--ask anyone in the world where and
what CB's is and they'll tell you, probably with a mention of the Ramones--and
replacing it with dorms. So take advantage while you can. - D.M.

Comments - Not a bad place. Mellow overall, a place where people go to drink beer and chat at a bar or in a booth. Nubile, slightly surly NYU students serve a variety of beer. What kinds? I dunno. I was drinking Jack and Coke. There's two floors, the jukebox could use some updating (God bless Van Morrison, but do I really need to hear "Brown Eyed Girl" ever again?), but wasn't bad. The crowd ranged from people in their twenties to their fifties. Food, too. I heard the oysters and turkey burger were okay. Suggestion: giving people daisies from a $4 bouquet at the deli on 13th will brighten people's day, and the chicas working there look fine with one in their hair. - S.G.

This is an awesome bar! Call it the sports bar/Irish bar for the 21st century. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but once you walk in, you are immediately comforted by the dark wood floors and walls, the flat screen

Very
nice place w/ good service and a nice up-keep. An upstairs floor

The Hip Hop Lounge is so comfortable and the DJ is off the hook!
The people were really mellow and cool. The upstairs was jam
backed and the music was wack, but if your into the techno music
then you will like it. But definitely check out the lounge
downstairs, if your into Hip Hop! - J.T.
This club was hot, The house/techno music needs to be updated. The hip hop was on point. Slightly snobby crowd, but, after everyone's drinks

My favorite little bar in NYC. Dark and dingy with some Tijuana specials to liven up the room.
Last time I was there, I hooked up with the sweetest little Spanish girl. God loves all those who visit the
Cherry Tavern. - B.D.

My first time at Chetty Red's was amazing. Good service, good people, nice crowd, good music.
Just an amazingly good city place very classy! It only got better every time I went back! -

Great new place in an easy to reach location. Great service and gorgeous barmaids make this a perfect place to relax and hangout after a long day. The low-lit atmosphere and the optional dance floor also make for a great singles scene. - K.M.

famous NYC nightclub. Two floors of drinking and a roof recently
opened. Music venue varies. Open to the public on Friday,
Saturday, & Monday nights. Monday is the big night. $20 cover
most nights. You can get discount passes ($5 off cover) at the
Times Square Visitors' Center (before 8 PM) or at many of the
nearby bars (Mc Hales, Rum House, Playwright, Pig 'n Whistle,
Langans, etc.) - T.K.
If your into the hip hop scene and just chillin' with a drink in
your hand, this is not the place. I hated it. The DJ was like 80
years old and the trance music made me want to puke. The lounge
downstairs wasn't any better. - J.T.
This place is very over-rated. Without the wall of celebrity
pictures, this place would just be another really, really
expensive club with OK music. There was an amazing magician there
one night and the promoters bring in some nice looking dancers to
raise your heart rate. But in general, I pass. - T.C.
I have been here a bunch of times. This place really depends on
what night you go. It is a good night when there is hip-hop in
the two rooms besides for main room. - E.C.
I went last there last night, Monday and had the time of my life.
The greatest bartenders I have ever seen. - T.G.

More of a restaurant than a bar, a place for the trendy, with techno music playing in the background. Apple martinis are highly recommended. Staff is friendly and bathrooms are in good shape.
Celebs, such as Carson Daly and Adam Carolla have been known to frequent. A little pricey. A little different than most, but worth a shot. -

Village speakeasy, where finding it is half the fun. There is no
sign on the door, so you may pass it on your first try. Once you
get there, relax and have a drink, and absorb the atmosphere and
history at this throwback to prohibition (yuck). Large selection
of draught beer. This place is small and popular, which equals
crowded. Cool retro juke-box. Also serves pub food and burgers. -

Enjoyable spot to meet friends. Packed on weekends. -

Great place to go if you can possibly get in. So packed with
tourists and NYU students that the only time to get a seat is
off-peak. They do have food and a lot of beer on tap, so def try
to make it....in the middle of the day. - S.A.
I finally found it!! The bartender was nice, atmosphere great and
those dogs on the floor aren't fake. I loved it and will return
on next trip to NYC. - B.B.
Bartender was too busy eating right at the bar to fix me a drink.
Other bartender felt put out by my drink order. - B.J.
Pretty fun place but definitely make it ONE of the stops for the
night, not the only place. The Labrador Lager is really tasty.

This is a very nice place to visit if you can afford it.
The (weekend night) crowd is young and rich. The food was good,
but not great. Lots of eye candy though. - K.J.
Capitalizing on the popularity of hot hotel lobby bars, the
Tribeca Grand Hotel has a spacious and hip lobby bar and lounge
area. Drinks are priced for Tribeca hipsters and wealthy
travelers. In a rarity for downtown, there were actually friendly
doormen. The blue-lit ceiling may remind you of the times that
you have drank until dawn. - S.M.
This is a large bar/lounge located off the lobby of the Tribeca
Grand Hotel. It draws a mixed crowd of all ages. There is a high
ceiling and many cocktail tables. The prices are rather expensive
($8 for a bottle of Amstel Light). The service is decent. The
hotel lobby bathrooms are more than adequate. - T.K.

- Cool lounge for Gramercy hipsters. Dark candlelit room
with nice furniture and an outdoor garden patio in back.
Expensive drinks (what makes a Corona worth $7?) Serves food, and
has an extensive scotch and wine list. - S.M.
A gorgeous little lounge in a great area. Love the decor...very
chic. I thought the drinks were a teeny weeny bit pricey. I
ordered two martini's and the total price was $36. That's NYC for
ya. Be prepared to pay a lotta $$$$ for drinks, unless you have

Mexican bar/restaurant with an additional bar/lounge in the

We were there for the first game of the subway series, the 12

Clancy's and were able to belly up at the bar for the night. The
steak dinners were great! The TV sights were excellent. The
bartender even accommodated me with black and tans! The wood work
at the bar is classic. Good times! - N.F.

- I really liked this place. It
is is one of the larger outdoor spots on the Jersey Shore. They have a band and dancing outside with seating and a raw bar. It draws an older (40 to 60) clientele. The scenery is great (it's on the water). They have a large, more low-key bar inside with a dining area and numerous TVs for sports viewing. The bar service is a little lacking (they should have more bartenders). The prices are reasonable. The bathrooms are more than adequate. They sometimes close early. -

Queens' answer to Coyote Ugly and Red Rock West, just wilder. Definitely a dive, but after

M.T.
This bar has to be the worst bar I have ever been in, and believe me, I've been to some really bad bars.
Let's start with the atmosphere: The bar is filled with a bunch of greasy middle aged men and four bar
maids that look like they've been on crack most of there adult life. Now getting to the
decoration: Bubble wrap!!!!! Yes, bubble wrap. That is what they use to cover the front window.
If that is not bad enough. the tube lighting around the whole bar will get you sick to your stomach.
OK, what's next? Oh yeah, the service. Now you would think that with four girl behind the bar it would not be so hard to get a drink.
Well it shouldn't be, but since these girls are flirting with the old men, getting dollar bills thrown down there
tops, you're waiting a while for a drink. Oh yeah, get this! When the girl finally gets to you, she has the nerve to ask you to buy her a drink.
And half the time they don't even drink. They'll just put the money in the register for the owner.
By the way, did I tell you, she's always there? She's a real prize too. OK,
getting along now. We're up to the bathrooms. One bathroom, one toilet, no urinal, 20 guys that have been drinking cheap beer all night .
You do the math. - J.J.

Comments - Although
the cigar bar craze has faded, Club Macanudo is still an elegant
Upper East Side cigar bar that takes cigar smoking to its most
upscale proportion. Rush Limbaugh and Larry King have their own
humidors, which are rented like gym lockers on the back
wall. The space consists of three rooms, with the bar in
the main middle area, and a front and rear smoking parlor.
This is either your scene, and youll go to see and be seen,
or else you will despise it as obscene and blatantly
decadent. Either way, it is so very New York. Dont go
if youre pinching pennies. Jacket required. - S.M.

This is a small bar in Midtown Manhattan that seems like
it should be elsewhere. It's much more of a bar than a
restaurant. It seems to draw a wide range of people (all ages and
races). There are a certain number of students from Fordham's
nearby Midtown campus. It features several TVs, a jukebox,
cocktail tables and high-tops, pictures of celebrities behind the
bar and pictures of Ireland on the walls, and a low ceiling
(smoky). It's not a fancy place (the vinyl on some of the stools
is torn), but I wouldn't use the word 'dive'. The lighting is not
too bright and not too dim. It has friendly and efficient Irish
bartenders. The prices are reasonable. The bathrooms are adequate. The Coliseum may be gone, but
this place is still alive. - T.K.
