21, 2006 Alfonso Soriano's 40-40 Celebration And then we went to the 40/40 Club... By Jacqueline Beach “Fresh out the fryin pan into the fire I be the music biz number one supplier…” Music mogul Jay-Z’s words, beats, and bass pumped out of speakers like balls out of a pitching machine at the batting cages. Suspended cream leather egg-shaped chairs swung amidst plasma TV screens of all sizes (including three giant movie theater-sized screens) and a colossal slate bar. Jay-Z’s super sleek and sophisticated sports lounge 40/40 Club launched a private party for Washington Nationals’ Alfonso Soriano, the newly appointed 4th member of baseball’s 40-40 club (for those who don’t know about this achievement, it’s when a player hits 40 home runs and steals 40 bases in a single season). |

Throngs of thong-wearing ladies and
souped-up suited men hovered by the formidable swinging metal door waiting for a glimpse of
Soriano. Although I never actually saw him, I believe Soriano and his troupe busted through the door, through the eager clusters of fans, and straight to a private party room around 8:30 p.m. because the crowd suddenly cleared. In any case, the private party was held in one of at least 5 gigantic, fully-equipped private rooms in this 12,000 square-foot, multi-leveled club. I was left to explore the high-rolling space to look for 99 problems. None to be found. |

A wide slate staircase led to a jersey-lined hallway of billowing white cloth and mysterious chrome doors. I made a bold move and pushed one open. Homerun. VIP room. Of the three pool table-filled, big screen-covered, cream leather couch-lined rooms I was privy to, my favorite was one boasting walls lined with spectacular, close-up photographs of world-class athletes. Pete Sampras next to Cal Ripken, Jr. next to Shaquille O’Neal, next to Emmitt Smith… I was ball-busted out of another room (with a large bed in the middle!) after being informed it was in use for a private party. It’s a hard knock life. |
