Grand Opening of R Bar
And then we went to the grand opening of R Bar...
by Jackie Beach

Rock and roll. Red. Revolutionary. You get to decide what the R stands for at R Bar, Bowery Street’s blazing new drinkery. The owners of Brass Monkey in the Meatpacking District have rocketed the Irish pub once known as Pioneer into the glam days of candy rock and roll. The crimson lit room with polished floors and bars provide ample space for chatting, dancing, and getting all kinds of randy. Walls covered in prints of Mick Jagger, Lennon, Debbie Harry, and Victoria’s Secret Gone Wild exude racy sexuality.

The four stripper poles and plush black leather couches in the back room might have something to do with the wanton tone as well. All night, bartenders  doled out martini glasses spilling Satisfaction (gin, pomegranate juice,  and squeeze of lime) and White Stripe candy (secret recipe, but my guess is Kahlua, tequila, and Bailey’s?)*.  A hot female DJ spun an eclectic mix of  Raconteurs, Joan Jett, the Jets, a Strawberry Fields re-mix, Queen,  Bittersweet Symphony, The Ramones and more. A business-casual, after-work  crowd rendezvoused with hot hipsters and spicy media writers and PR personnel.
Tasty tortilla triangles topped with chicken and pico de gallo were passed  hors d’oeuvres and friends clamored around large bowls of chips and fresh salsa.

As expected, the owners were rushing around ensuring all was in place and  everyone was enjoying themselves. They had nothing to fret about. There were smiles aplenty, drinking galore, and maybe just a speck of flashing.
*The owner Colin later gave me the "secret" recipe for the White Stripe martini: Bailey's, tequila rose, Ketel One vodka, and milk.  And there's also a Red Stripe, which has a swirl of grenadine on top.  Both are served with a candy cane stick.
