October 4, 2007 OK, in all honesty, there was no way I could have known this was going to happen. Originally I—along with Lost Girls Amanda, Holly and Jen—had planned this gathering to take place at Club Midway (25 Ave B). Its funky carnival décor, tasty bar food and the always good music in the air made it seem like the perfect place to meet up. And it would have been except for one thing. As I got off the F and started walking to the bar, I got a message from my friend Dmitry telling me that Club Midway was closed for ‘Emergency Repairs’. I immediately called Holly and we got to the task of telling everyone to meet us across the street at Croxley Ales (28 Avenue B). I stood guard outside for a little while when Amanda got there. Holly made signs to hang on the door of Midway. Jen showed up a few minutes later and everyone eventually found there way to us. This would turn out to be a fine choice. Of course the many boisterous Yankee fans made talking a little difficult. That is until they were losing 10 - 3 to the Indians, then the place got very quiet.
My friend Adam had the best description for this place. He called it a gothic sports bar. With its old-English church-like fixtures juxtaposed with the large screen TVs, it certainly lived up to that. As I mentioned, the place was packed with rabid Yankee fans. As an added attraction, during any playoff games, they serve up 20¢ wings. They seem to be either really proud of their wings, or they just have too many because on certain nights, for whatever reason the wings could be 20¢, 10¢ or even free. They have a plethora of beer to choose from and their happy hour drink prices are decent, but not fantastic. It comes out to a dollar off each drink. They also have different food and drink combo specials each night. For example, on Thursdays you can get a burger and a pint for $12.95. On Tuesdays it’s Nacho Madness. $4.95 Nachos ($6.95 topped with chili) and $3.00 for the ‘Beer of the Week’. Check their site for more. One drawback to all of these food and booze combos is that this place only has one bathroom. After all is said and done, what we have here is a cool sports bar within a pub atmosphere. It’s very popular with local sports fans. Of course I’m sure I’d find a large cluster of happy patrons even if I came here on a non-baseball-hockey-whatever-else-night. But are there such nights anymore? Ultimately this night turned out to be a happy, unexpected turn of events. The reasons why we threw this gathering were to meet up, chat up and generally let loose the stress of the day. And we did that and thankfully our impromptu alternate locale turned out to be a good one. Links: |
