Not What the Title Suggests, but...

And then I went to see Adira Amram is an American Idol.

By Stephen Bailey

The Peoples Improv Theater is a small place on the second floor of 154 W 29th St, NYC. Their goal is to entertain, educate and promote original comedy. They do this thru a school of improvisation and writing, studios that are available to rent at reasonable prices and a massive amount of performances every week. Their motto is “Improv Your Life.”

"Adira Amram is an American Idol"

One of tonight’s shows was ‘Adira Amram is an American Idol’; a crowd-pleasing, cheese-filled cabaret. I had thought from the title that it would be a spoof on the Fox TV phenomenon. Instead it was one girl, one keyboard and glitter which set the scene for songs whose themes ranged from accolades for NYC to her love of playing Mortal Kombat to peeing on the toothbrush of a guy she was mad at. When they wound up staying together, she didn’t know how to tell him what she did. So she just watched as he brushed his teeth.

There were a series of costume changes that included a get up that triggered memories of Olivia Newton John’s ‘Physical’ video and an American Flag bikini among others. We were also treated to more touching themes such as the love song ‘I Want Some Dick Tonight’ and a tribute to getting high with her mom who grows her own out back by the basil. And let’s face it; getting high with mom means you’ll always have a bunch of decent food to tame the munchies.

Adira offered us a comic look into her public life with a video expose of her sky-rocket to fame at the age of 17 and hard crash at 17 1/2. Ripe with echoes of Dana Plato meets Elvis Presley it is a tragic tale of drugs, sex, over-eating, bulimia, tabloid covers and after-death sightings among other famous clichés. Later, a second video mocked MTV Cribs with a tour of her NYC loft and her stock if Goya products. She took us out to show us her ride only to find a stripped, burned out SUV.

The show ended with an encore of ‘Ava Maria’ in full 80’s R&B style. The red pompoms on her boobs were an added bonus to this dead language classic.
