Winter Drinks on the Edge of the Meat Packing District

And then we went to a Media Mixer at Brass Monkey…
by Jackie Beach

If you find yourself wandering around, lost in the Meatpacking District looking for Brass Monkey, take heed this advice: walk towards the Hudson River. Brass Monkey is the last stop on Little West 12th St. (not to be confused with West 12th St.)
right smack next to the West Side Highway. As the bartender standing outside the door says to confused-looking, young professionals and hipsters walking past, "You might as well come in. You can’t go any further."

Brass Monkey

After walking in and being greeted by the peering gaze of regulars tucked into the front bar, you’re faced with a dilemma.
Do I pick one of twenty nicely priced draught beers or choose something steamy from the intriguing winter drink menu?
L
uckily for those attending the media mixer last Wednesday, a sample of hot toddies was chosen for us.
The Hot Cider with Spiced Rum went down mighty easily (watch out!) and the whiskeys infused with either cinnamon and cranberries or orange and cloves proved to be delectably dangerous combinations. For those preferring beverages with a caffeine punch, a variety of sumptuous coffee drinks were also offered. The Carrot Cake Coffee has Bailey’s, Kahlua, Goldschlager, coffee, and cream and the Chocolate Cake Coffee is made with Citron vodka, Frangelico, coffee, and cream.
Both are served frothy and steaming hot.

To be expected, all the mention of baking spices, fruit and cake stirred up some appetites and Brass Monkey made good on
their food offerings as well. We were served traditional Irish fare including crispy fish ‘n chips, rich, flavorful Shepard’s pie as well as other bar favorites including house-made crab cakes and my favorite - steamed mussels in a spicy tomato and herb broth served with crusty toasted bread, shoestring fries, and garlic aioli. If that $14 masterpiece doesn’t keep you sated, nothing will.

Take your friends, visiting out-of-towners, work buddies, whoever to Brass Monkey for great drinks and fantastic grub.  The atmosphere is relaxed and cozy, and not without the energy flowing through every good Irish pub. The exposed brick, high ceilings and large mirrors juxtapose wood rafters, wood trim, wood floors, and wooden nooks to make this den downright homey. And the bartenders are mighty cute as well.

Brass Monkey is located at 55 Little West 12th St.
