Up On the Roof
And then Hearst celebrated the launching of many websites at 230 Fifth
By Stephen Bailey

I've been freelancing at Hearst Communications for several months now. It's been great because, unlike a real job, I get to hop around from project to project keeping my days interesting. Most of what I've been doing is preparation for a massive amount of website launches. I worked on five sites and I believe there were eighteen altogether. On Wednesday night, the company celebrated the launching of the last site with a big rooftop party at the rooftop lounge called 230 Fifth.

The building at 230 Fifth Avenue is an unsuspecting place for the average passer by. A mid-rise, unassuming office complex with an old marble lobby, there is no real hint to what awaits on the roof except for the very long, cordoned off walk to the back elevators which take you to the top floor. The main room looks like a large, swanky VIP lounge from a 70s dance club with eclectic accents like the stuffed tiger under the stairs.

The rooftop itself has an air of Miami in its design. The massive space easily fits hundreds of reveling business folk. Well, almost easily. The oversized wrought iron chairs and wood benches were a bit much and kept getting in the way of mingling legs. And I had the bruises to prove it. Still no one really seemed to mind being packed in thanks in part to the great mix of 80s music and supercharged mixed drinks. I heard the food was OK too, but I did not partake.

Admittedly any place is more appealing when someone else is footing the bill. But I think folks could have fun here anytime. Wind passing thru palm trees in the shadow of the Empire State Building is quite nice. Though the place is enormous—billed as the largest roof deck in NYC—and overcrowded, you can still find an intimate corner here or there. Just beware the hot sun in the summer and the possibility of an attack by an exotic animal. Sure they're stuffed but with drinks as stiff as these, things seemed more alive and dangerous.
