The Velvet Rope-A-Dope
How I somehow got denied entry to a place I was already in...
By Stephen Bailey

The Coffee Shop Bar
29 Union Square West, NYC

My friends Helen and Gopal had joined me to see David Calomaneri at Parkside Lounge earlier this evening. After the show, Gopal mentioned that he had a party to go to at The Coffee Shop Bar (29 Union Square West, NYC). I had only been to The Coffee Shop Bar at 3:00 AM to eat. So I wasn't sure what to expect at the peak time of 11:00 PM. Well, the place was jam packed and, in the back room where the party revelers were, there was only one bartender.

While the constant and unavoidable pushing and bumping and spilling was a bit annoying, Gopal's friends seemed really nice and I was willing to stick around for a bit. Plus I heard we were all moving to a downstairs dance and lounge area. This I felt would give me a better chance at getting to know these people. So off we went when I was stopped and told I could not enter with my drink. Weird, but OK. I sucked it down to the point of nearly choking and tried again to enter.

The less-than-friendly bouncer muttered something to me. "I'm sorry, what?" I asked. He repeated himself this time pointing to my feet, "Sneakers." The other less-than-friendly bouncer translated for me saying, "You can't come in wearing sneakers." I stood stunned for a second because technically I was in and had been for some time. I freaked little and there were some profanities expressed. I'm not a big fan of the velvet rope. Especially if you're already in a joint, spending money and all you want to do is move to another room.

I've said it many times, these bouncers have no idea how much I'm capable of spending in a night and most of these 'well-dressed' slick scenesters that they do allow in are only looking to score with the ladies. They put on a good show pretending to be big spenders but really don't lay out much cash at all and rarely are they good tippers. And you can forget about the hordes of ladies who pass inspection because they come knowing full well they most likely won't pay for anything. Not their fault mind you. I don't blame them for it. But these clubs need to see that for every couple of drink a guy buys for a girl, there's usually one not being bought for himself.

Anyway, overall I have to say that The Coffee Shop Bar is large enough and diverse enough that you will probably find something to your liking if you can deal with the crowds. Whether it be not-too-bad late-night comfort food, average priced drinks, a hot but somewhat moody wait staff or maybe dancing (apparently). Of course they need to rethink their image as a hip place for people to go without having to worry about being turned away by a bouncer. At least for those wanting to take part in the 'dancing' portion of the night.
