The Far West Side got a new bar this month, as Whistlin' Dixie's
Texas Tavern held its grand opening. Built in the former
Irish pub The Bull McCabe, Dixie's promises to bring some Texas
flavor to Hell's Kitchen.
With 4th of July falling on a Wednesday this year, many New Yorkers stayed
in town instead of hitting the beaches for a long weekend. Add
to that the promise of free beer, and the line was down the block as I
arrived on 11th Avenue. Nothing attracts a crowd like a
crowd. And nothing attracts that crowd like free beer.
So there was plenty of revelers on hand to welcome Dixie's on
opening night.
The enthusiastic crowd was dancing on table tops, singing along
to the songs the DJ was cranking, and generally having a great
time. The slogan "hard to get to, impossible to leave"
rang true, as the party ran well into the late hours.
