January 26 , 2008 Walking along Bedford towards North 10th on my way to My Moon (184 N. 10th St, Brooklyn), I couldn't help but to think about the level of celebration that would be going on tonight. With the starting of my new gig at Men's Fitness and The Lost Girls scoring a major book deal, this was going to be quite a night. On top of all of that was yet another (and the original) reason for the party. A birthday. Friend and Lost Girl Holly Corbett will be turning 30 in a few days. This alone may seem like just another birthday, but those who know Holly, know better. For the past year, on the website WatchMeTurn30.com, Holly has shared her life with all of us. Through photos and short stories, we were blessed with an intimate look at a year in her life. Of course being Holly's friend means you were bound to be caught by her little camera, as I was on a couple of occasions. Rounding the corner on North 10th, I approached the large, copper logo of My Moon. As I passed under, I could imagine this courtyard in the summer as the draped cloth around the tables and benches fluttered in the cold winter wind. I'd soon discover that this outside area was as large as the inside. This former factory turned hip bar and restaurant is a testament to majestic simplicity. Large brick walls are all but bare, save the sparse wall hangings, including what looks like a giant back-lit warrior shield. There was some industrial, mechanical sculpture of a psychotic flying contraption hanging from the ceiling. It's tail fan made a nice breeze. It's apparently part of an upcoming art installation. The space is in fact perfect for showcasing art of all forms. Heavy wood furniture, dim lights and booths that looked as though they were cut out of the hull of a ship completed the atmosphere. The bottled beer seemed reasonably priced, but the mixed drinks were a little on the petite and expensive side. Thankfully they were mixed strong to the point of flammable. Plus I somehow wrangled my way to drinking three free shots of So-Co and Lime. I'm not really sure how that happened. Mind you, I'm not complaining. At this point it was clear that the front-heavy barstools were not 'drunk friendly'. I can't vouch for the food, but those who ate here tonight raved. The menu is Turkish, I believe. Very good service here too. Drinks were served promptly and always with a smile, even as the restaurant let us stay long after closing. Of course, I think that had more to do with our hostesses Jennifer Baggett and Amanda Pressner of The Lost Girls than being a regular occurrence. There was such a great crowd of people here. Try as I might to meet new people, catch up with old friends, flirt here, flirt there ... I admit to getting socially dizzy from time to time. No worries though. Since this party was destined to go all night, I thought I'd have all the time in the world to mingle. Holly had been saying for days that she wanted a bunch of us to watch the sun come up. And she kept on saying it ... right up until we all decided to go home. Bless her for trying, but we were all wiped (in a good way). And bless her sister for making a sweet collage of embarrassing yet adorable childhood photos of Holly just for the occasion. My friend Dean--who I swear will play bass in a band with me just as soon as I get my shit together--walked with me to the train. That is after we made sure my other friend Jennifer got safely into a cab. There would be no watching the sun come up for this trooper. The 'L' to the PATH to a cab to my bed was all I needed to end this wonderful night. A final thought occurred to me ... who will take over WatchMeTurn30.com. I know Holly was out recruiting last week, so we'll have to see. Links: |
