'Twas a Grand Night, Until ...
Flashing lights, pulsing music and a wretched trip home
By Stephen Bailey

After seeing Kabuki Killers at Arlene's Grocery, a couple of friends and I decided that the night was not nearly over. We made our way over to The Annex (152 Orchard St, NYC) for a late night of dancing. Yes, yes ... I know. This is becoming way more common for me than those of you who know me can believe. I honestly don't believe it myself. But lately I've tried to squeeze more fun out of my life.

I've been to The Annex several times to see bands. I can't vouch for the drink prices on this night, but in the past they seemed reasonable enough. There was a cover of $10 and a mandatory $5 coat check. We all piled our coats on to one hanger and I joked with the friendly girl about her getting a work out. I made sure to tip her later as I left. I can imagine this being a thankless job.

This was my first time experiencing the flashing lights and pulsing music of what they call Tiswas 2.0. The 2.0 refers to this being the second decade of partying for this group of DJs. The crowds upstairs and down bopped freely to the music. Even I found myself lost in various moments of abandon. I was proud of my total lack of inhibition and my will power to resist the temptation of the smokers in the basement. I was having a great time .. until ...

For various reasons that I will only describe as 'not wanting to be a third wheel', I decided to leave. Besides, it was already after 3:00, so it was time to go for me in more ways than one. As I walked out and made my way to Houston St, a large fight broke out from some other nightspot, spilling into the traffic. Then, once on the platform for the 'F' train, I noticed far too many people waiting for this time of the night. It turned out that there was no uptown train until 5:00.

My choices were to either hop the downtown train to Jay Street in Brooklyn and then an 'A' train back uptown or catch a cab. I chose the cab. This was not an easy task since the clubs were starting to let out. However, in my only bit of luck, after waiting about five minutes, a cabby avoided several fares and pulled up to me. I didn't question why. Originally wanting to go to Christopher & Hudson for a shorter time the PATH, the ride was slow so I had him drop me at 9th St & 6th Ave.

I was sober enough to appreciate that getting on the uptown train--despite going in the opposite direction--would guarantee me a seat. There's only one train at this hour and this is a fairly short line so the ride was not all that much longer than normal. All was great for a while as I flirted with three cute girls and joked with a couple of guys. The train filled up fast on it's return journey downtown. Aside from the drunk passed out next to me, there seemed to be a remarkably low level of obnoxious late-night bridge and tunnel types.

Then ... it happened. We were under the river, nearly in Hoboken when I noticed my drunk neighbor sit up with cheeks puffed and his hand on his lips. His friend laughed, "Uh oh, here we go." The drunk then drops his head between his knees and I quickly stood up. At first, the three cute girls look at me like I was just some perv trying to rub against them. After all, we were still on a moving train and I had a coveted seat. I gestured to the scene behind me and, in unison they loudly screamed, "EWWW!"

When the door opened, they ran off to catch a cab. I decided that I needed to clean the grime of this horrid commute off of me with a nice, long walk in the cool air of what was now the early morning. It was nearly an hour in a half since leaving The Annex by the time I passed out on my couch. I certainly don't want to take away from the overall fun of the night, but afterwards was one hell of an adventure. Hopefully the next time I decide to dance (or awkwardly sway) the night away, I'll just keep going 'til dawn.
