I like seeing shows at Club Midway. Much
like the name suggests the atmosphere is that of a circus. Well, in
décor at least. All else is a fine bar/lounge upstairs and small but
well-run live music venue downstairs. Tonight was being presented by
Organic Entertainment. They were celebrating the new CD release from Ben
Godwin called 'Skin and Bone'.
The night began with a special acoustic
performance by Drew Gonzalves of the Calypso/Roots Reggae band Kobo
Town. Accompanying him on percussion was Polar Levine who performs under
the moniker of Polarity/1. This was a sweet, stripped down version of
the band's sound allowing us to not only enjoy the music, but hear the
stories behind the songs as well.

Up next was the cabaret, vaudevillian
stylings of Ben Godwin and his top notch band. His is a Cajun-flavored,
gritty view of life in New York City as seen thru English glasses. I was
struck by how I was singing along—or at the very least humming. Why is
that so weird? Because I had only heard his CD once. The sign of any
fine artist is the ability to subtly embed art into one's subconscious.
In addition to Organic Entertainment,
other sponsors included Music Dish and Radio Crystal Blue. Proceeds were
being donated to LifeBeat: The Music Industry Fights Aids. I would later
learn that Ben continues to donate $1.00 from the sale of each copy of
'Skin and Bone' to LIFEBeat.
